Default WD40, GOOD OR BAD?

I usually clean my nitro truck using WD-40 because it lubricates the car parts and gives a nice shiney finish but I have recently heard that it is not very good and can cause 'hair line fractures' and damage the gears. Is this true?

No it's not true I know a guy who has been into Rc's for over 20 years and he has about 50 or so Rc's, he swears by cleaning your rc's with WD-40, he says he will sray it down with it and take an air hose to it and spray it all off to clean it.

I tend to just spray it all except the break disks and gears and wipe of the excess with a cloth

WD40 can attack certain types of plastic and will make your tires softer but I've never had any real problems with it.

I use WD40 on my son and daughter`s racing Go Kart when we don`t have enough Tire Tac. And I use it a lot on my cars and truck

WD-40 is a degreaser. It other words it is a GREAT clean but should not be used to lubericate anything. Bearings need grease between them to run their best without the grease you are going to get fiction and could possilby cease.

So WD-40 great for cleaning dirt / grease / anything else that gets on your car or truck (or anything for that matter) but don't use it to lubericate it has the opposite effect. I worked on garage doors for 4 years this is what I learned maybe it is different w/ RC but I doubt it.

WD-40 is not a degreaser.

It's not an lubricant either. It's a cleaner. Mostly kerosene.

It's a Water Displacement and anti corrosion solution. That's what it was designed to be used for and what it actually was used for. The outside of Titan II missiles where treated with it to prevent corrosion.

Funnily enough, on the back of the can it says 'lubricates, cleans, avoids corrosion.'

OK I'll add my 2cents
WD-40 (I don't use it cause of the left over smell)

Lets start by removing some false ideas about WD-40

WD-40 stands for "Water displacement on the 40th attempt"

WD-40 does not contain silicone, kerosene, water, wax, graphite, chlorofluorocarbons

WD-40 is a degreaser

-What WD-40 can be used for-
CLEANS: WD-40 gets under dirt, grime and grease to clean. It also dissolves adhesives, allowing easy removal of labels, tape and excess bonding material.
DISPLACES MOISTURE: Because WD-40 displaces moisture, it quickly dries out electrical systems to eliminate moisture-induced short circuits.
PENETRATES: WD-40 loosens rust-to-metal bonds and frees stuck, frozen or rusted metal parts.
LUBRICATES: WD-40's lubricating ingredients are widely dispersed and tenaciously held to all moving parts.
PROTECTS: WD-40 protects metal surfaces with corrosion-resistant ingredients to shield against moisture and other corrosive elements.

WD-40 is safe on:
It is safe for metal, rubber, wood and plastic. WD-40 can be applied to painted metal surfaces without harming the paint

WD-40 Don'ts
Polycarbonate and clear polystyrene plastic are among the few surfaces on which to avoid using a petroleum-based product like WD-40.

So, WD-40 is a good cleaner, anti-corrsion to use on your RC

If your going to say some facts get them right!

WD-40 stands for 'Water Displacement, 40th Formula'

Fine, your correct.
Anyway, the fumes from the WD-40 would probably kill me before they start to harm my car

WD-40 is a degreaser. This might not be the intended use but it is.

If you do not believe me take a wheel that uses bearings (new w/ grease) and spray some in there spin the wheel a little maybe even give it a few days but the grease is now gone and the bearings are touching each other. Metal on metal for bearings is not good.

I am not saying it can't be used to lubricate but if you are going to make sure you do it often because it will wear off quickly. I am not pulling this out of no where. As I said I installed garage doors for a while and 9 out of 10 problems with the rollers on the doors were because the bearings feel out because there were no grease left and a nice can of WD-40 right there!

I am not claiming to be an expert just trying to give some advice from what I have learned over the years.
