Default HomeDepot Kerosene

My kero tank(100gal.Bought 2yrs ago) was empty. So I went to local HD store. When I try to grap a kero,I couldn't believe my eyes.
I paid $10 per gal. Which is higher than I expected. I should fly small turbine now.
I got my tax refund. But my wife took it. Because I burnt my wife's favorite sofa. What can I say....[]
And I got speeding ticket first time ever. [:@]

That was my weekend story.[)]

If you have low time P70,pm me.

Just bought all the remaining inventory at the HD here (9 five gallon cans) for $26 each - it was $35.95. The manager told me this year they had no intension to mark it down 50% like years past.

I have a Mapco just a few blocks away. They were selling kero for 3.19 until just about a week ago. Now it's 4.19.

Home Depots cost on the five gallon kero is $29.65. They dont seam to be willing to deal this year as now its getting up in the serious loss money range. Scott

so whats the advantage of kero over jet A-1 if any? I can get jet A for near nothing (actually. i can get 5 to 40 gallons at a time for free when we do fuel system work)...

Kero is more refined and stinks less than Jet-A.

Kero is more refined and stinks less than Jet-A.
It also has quite a few additives that Kero doesn't have such as anti-oxidents, anti-static, anti-ice and anti-corrosion as well as a biocide to keep algae growth out of the fuel.

that i'm aware of... but whats the advantage of using kero in our turbines compared to jet A. seems the anti-static and corrosion additives would be a plus for us. Seeing how their is anti-static additives and fuel lines available now.

there aren't any disadvantages to using Kero that I'm aware of and it tends to be a bit cheaper if you can find it at the pump. convenience and price should be the deciding factor as both are adequate fuels with no major advantages or disadvantages over each other in our applications.

KC36330 and any other pilots that have used Jet A fuel.

I use Kero w/turbine oil but the time I used Jet A fuel every time I spooled the engine up it burned the grass behind it. I have never experience this with Kerosene/turbine oil. Does that happen to those of you that use Jet A fuel?

i fly off concrete so no burnt grass. I've used Kero, Jet A and JP-8 all with no problems at all in JetCat turbines, if there were any higher EGTs they weren't anything significant.

Oh BTW, you typed it out as Kero/Turbine Oil, you have to add the oil to all fuel.

The smell - Jet A really stinks.

If I have to deal with fuel smell inside my vehicle, from e.g. a dripping overflow tube or even just fuel that dribbled down the side of a fuel can while filling it, I'd MUCH rather it be kero than Jet-A.

Gordon,
i'll agree with you their! I deal with jet A all day every day by either flying with it or working with it, so i'm kind of used to it. I was more concerned if their was more of a reason for me to start using kero than Jet A. As i can get jet A for free basically. Luckily i have a truck so all the fumes stay outside of the interior, but i have to find a trailer to pull my planes around..

If their was a reasonably good reason to go w/ kero over Jet-A, then i wouldnt mind the cost of kero. but since the only good reason so far is smell, i'll go with the free stuff. the only thing is, my free stash varies at time, so i'll probly be stuck buying kero at certain times during the year anyways.

Ian-

I think that's right. However it's up to the discretion of the store manager whether or not to discount a product. It took a managers approval to override to price at the register.

I ran by the Home Depot here in Palo Alto and had them look up the SKU, nothing in stock in the Bay Area and better yet the item has been listed as "Out of Season" so they will not be getting anymore of it.

How can any jet fuel possibly be considered stinky? Maybe it's just I'm a former FA-18C mech, and like the smell. JP-4 (a-1), JP-5, JP-8, I like them all burned or not.

I hear you! I was an F-15C crew chief for 5 years, and then F-16C for a year as a civilian and I miss the smell of the flightline.
