1st twin question
Hi Guys,
I was at my LHS yesterday and could not resist a electic p-38 he had for sale . It is the Phase 3 electic P-38 with two brushless motor and ESC. So far I`m very impressed with the model. the color sheem is great too. One thing I was surprised about, The props rotate in the same direction? I know the full scale P-38 had counter- rotating props, and the E-flite 38 as well. My question is , do your bigger twins rotate in the same direction or are they counter? This is my 1st twin and I`m not sure what to expect when I maidian next week?

Don't worry about it. The original P-38 had counter rotating props to improve airflow over the tail..infact they rotate outboard giving it two critical engines. Modern twins with counter rotating props such as the Navajo Chieftan have the top of the props rotating inboard to reduce the adverse yaw in the event of an engine failure - so neither engine is critical. But in reality, most multi engine full scale aircraft have the props all rotating in the same direction.
The chance of an engine failure in an electric is almost nil. The chances of the dynamics of a small model requiring flow straightening that can only be achieved by counter rotating props is pretty slim as well. Unless you are competing in Scalemasters, or Top Gun, it is not a concern.
Now, if you are dead set in having CR props for the scale effect, it is simple to reverse a brushlees motor. However, I'm not aware on anyone that manufactures an electric pusher prop which you would need to use on the reversed moton.....

Hi There,
I am building electric Twins for the past 4 years, and have allways done them CR. I know that the chance of one elctric failing is slim, but - it is nicer and more scale. Even on my Cessna 337 Skymaster - scratch build, the props are counter rotating and it keeps the thing streight and smooth as I open throttle to take off.
On my current project (Scartch build - Hawkeye E-2C , 80") I will also have CR props - 4 blades from Zinger Props (I will have to paint them black of course) and a special cut set of spinners from Tru-Turn, the lot is expensive, but - our hobby is not cheap either.
