The instructions that came with my Giant Super Sportster and the Fuji 32ei don't really cover this part..

I have the included spinner with back plate and I also bought the required prop bolt that is drilled for the spinner bolt. I have 18" wooden props. I had to ream the prop to get the prop bolt to fit. The threaded section of the prop bolt is thinner in diameter than the non threaded section and I am pretty sure that only the threaded section goes through the prop?? I set it up like this:


First I put the thin sandpaper like disk that comes with the engine, then the spinner backplate, then the prop, then the black washer that comes with the engine and all held together with the prop bolt. My concern is that by the time the prop bolt goes through the washer, prop & backplate there is only about 1/4" of threads that actually screw into the flange to hold the assembly onto the motor. I hope this is safe?? It is making me think I did something wrong or perhaps I am supposed to ream the prop enough to get the smooth part of the prop bolt through the prop as well...


Any help would be appreciated.

I HAVE 4 OF THE FUJI ENGINES AND I HAVE MINE SET UP THAT THE SMOOTH SURFACE OF THE SPINNER ADAPTER PROP BOLT GOES THROUGH THE PROP AS WELL. THIS GIVES YOU HEAPS ON THREAD THROUGH THE PROP FLANGE.IT DOES MEAN THAT YOU WILL NEED A LONG BOLT TO HOLD YOUR SPINNER ON .i HAVE THEM ON A DAVE BROWN 4 -1/2' AND 5' SPINNER

Then what do you do about the prop washer? The one that came with the engine only fits up to where the threads end. I would need a larger washer which is another reason I thought I had it the right way.

I reamed my aluminum washer out to fit the spinner adapter bolt so it fits over the smooth part and then the bolt will thread into the engine properly.

You may want to obtain a longer, hardened bolt. You can get one from any aircraft supply center or a fastener distributor. Don't use a hardware store bolt, it would not have enough tensile strength.

You could also try this:

Bax,

This is the bolt that I already have and the 2.4" does not appear to be long enough unless I do what the other folks recommended and bore the prop large enough to allow the smooth portion of the bolt to go into the prop. Are you saying that I should not do that?

Is there a minimum recommendation on the amount of bolt that should be screwed into the flange for maximum safety ? I have just over 1/4" of exposed threads.

I called Great Planes support and I think I have the problem solved. The washer that came with my engine is only bored for 8mm so it was stopping at the 10MM spot on the prop bolt. The tech at GP said the washer should have been bored for 10MM and it should slide all the way to the hex head.

I guess all I have to do is bore that out and I will be good to go.

It's also OK to bore out the propeller as needed to allow the bolt to seat fully into it.
