Default Couple of Questions...

So I got the Savage X 4.6 SS and while I haven't run it, I'm much more pleased with it than the T-Maxx.

Nonetheless, I have a couple of questions:

a) What is a good weight for the shock oil? I should note I'm running, or plan to be, some Axial 40 rims with Big Joes.

b) How about springs? The standard ones seem to have too many coils, are there any quality ones that have fewer coils to bind?

c) Whats a good oz/in rating for the steering and throttle servo, especially considering having the Big Joes? Is something like the HS-985MG and HS-965MG combo going to work? Or would the HS-7955S and HS-7965MG work better? Seems maybe 7965MG is a bit of an overkill, especially considering battery drain. Any other good servos, I just listed the Hitec stuff because I'm most familiar with it and JR.

Thanks.

Another local member!

What do you plan on doing with the truck? Racing or bashing it?

Bashing=20-30 weight oil. I have the stock 30 weight oil and it's definitely good. I've done MANY high jumps and no popped off shock caps or shafts bent...yet [8D]

As for the steering, 46U will state to go 200tq+, but depending on your application, I think a servo with about 150ish would be good. I know that there is a Tower Hobbies servo that has 193tq and costs only $40.

Since there ain't crap around here to race anymore, unless I wanna go to Joilet, its just bashing.

And you mean the Tower Hobbies TS-150 Std Digital HT 2BB MG Servo U (http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...?&I=LXPHD4&P=7)? That's pretty slow at .21....

I am running TowerPro MG995 for bashing. It is not the fastest or strongest servo out there but for 10 dollars it is a great deal. I think it is about 195 lb/in. If it breaks it is alot cheaper to replace and I have seen no issues with them yet.

[:-] What's "fast?" I figured it was a pretty good bang for buck with that amount of tq. The next step up from that model is close to $100 with titanium gears.

Oh ya, and for the throttle/brake servo, just put in the stock SF-2 from the steering.

Do Remember, It's great having a "tq" servo...
But it will be crap unless you have a Hump pack.

Fast would be the responce time that the manufacturer says it has. Also there are some issues with it over correcting and not going back to center but going past and then back to center. Not an issue unles you are racing and I have not noticed it....

FYI,

http://towerprocn.sh15.host.35.com/t...rvo/SERVO.html

And it has about a 140 oq/in. The one I have now is 152 oz/in. but doesn't feel like its enough.

i have the ts-150 in my savage plently of torque i bet if locked my servo saver up, put my savage on it's side it could lift it's self up with the servo, you don't really need more than 200 oz. imo, as for the .21 speed, yeah its a bit on the slow side if you're just turning the wheels in the air, on the track i've never noticed any lag, and it's always been plenty repsonsive, as for breaking, i just got a futaba s 3003 servo in and with the steel dual disks i've done a few front flips, but thats with dirtbones so maybe this http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...?&I=LXHHV5&P=0 if you want a bit more grab...

Why not just swap in the SF-2 from the steering into the brake/throttle? SF-2 has about 90 oz. IIRC and you don't have to spend any money.

I have a question about the linkages on the Savage XL. I've heard some people say that the linkages (throttle) aren't real good on the Savages. Is there anyone out there that agrees with this and have changed their linkage, and if so, what did you buy to replace it? Thanks.

I have a unique situation in that I have several trucks. I bought two [link=http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXTTH1&P=ML]of these[/link] to make it easier to pick out the two trucks with the modded Piccos in them. They work great! I never had a linkage issue, sometimes I had to make some creative adjustments on the throttle ball adjustment location to free up the linkage and get the proper travel. Bud

Yes, You are right, the savage throttle and break aren't the Best...
For the breaks they dont allow enough leverage...
And for the throttle, sometimes doesn't open the throttle full.
There are heaps of mods out there...
Here are some-

[link=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ze7M0CCCUqU]I guess I do not get the brake thing...[/link] if it has enough stopping power to stand an XL on its nose on the stock linkage, why do we need to modify it? Just curious, that is an XL with a stock SF-1 servo in it. I agree some of the mods are improvements... but far from needed right off the bat on a new truck. Bud

Thanks Midget and Bud. Midget, are the improvements you mention and are shown on the links made on earlier Savages up to and including the Savage X? Are the linkages on the newer Savage XL improved now over the ealier Savages. What do you all think? Thanks.

No, All the types of savages have all the same Linkages stock.
To be honest, in my opinion - The Stock linkages for me work fine...And there's nothing wrong with them.
I would take the time to set them up properly, then if your not happy, try one of the mods.

I guess it all depends on who's website you are looking at. [link=http://www.raidentech.com/2xtopromgmeg.html]Here[/link] is a link to the servo that says it has 210 oz/in.

The link I gave out is the link to Tower Pro's actual website, so thats what I'd go with. And since it states 10kg/cm on their site, converting that to oz/in means its a 138.9 oz/in.
