Default How to put wing bolts through the bottom of wing

I'm stuck and losing intrest. I need to add wing bolts through the bottom of wing and need to know how. This is a CA 31% Extra 300l. I also need to add them in the stab as well. These are foam core surfaces. any help would be appreciated.

Default Marcus....don't give up yet....

....yer' just getting to the fun part.....finishing up the
plane.... Here's the deal....you have foam wings, and
a big plane....so the wing hold-downs have to be big and strong....without smashing down, or compressing the foam.

What to do is....make wood plugs that the hold-down bolts
go through. Take a big dowel rod....a broom stick will do....
and cut two slices off about 3/4" or so....these are the plugs.

You will bore two holes in the foam wing, and epoxy the
plugs in real good....then cover them with thin plywood...
to make hold-down area super strong.

But first....you have to get the hold-downs in the fuselage,
so you can get the alighnmeent and spacing for the plugs.

On a big plane like that (a stunter) the hold-downs have to
be super strong....if you want the wing to stay on....and that
is always a good thing.

On the inside of the fuse, where the holds will be....take
two pieces of thin ply about 4X4'' and epoxy then to the
sides of the fuse. Holds fastened to balsa can rip out easily
because the surface of the balsa can be pulled off easily.

Get some oak, or other hardwood....and fashion your mounts
something like this....in this case....I am beefing up some
existing mounts....

The mounts will be epoxyed in....and drilled and tapped,
then thin CA will be applied to the wooden threads to
make them strong. Once you get the mounts in....you
can get the alighnment for the plugs in the wing.

This is a different plane....that used a single wing
mount....but I made it a double....

Once you get the mounts in....you can measure the
center across....and mark the wing to drill out for
the wood plugs.

Once you get the plugs in the wing....and the wing
alighned....you'll drill through the plugs, and into the
mounts at the same time....so the bolts will fit
perfectly. Remember to use a drill that is the "tap
size" only.....the wing will be drilled out larger later.

Then the plugs will be "capped over" with ply to finish
up the job. If necessary....relieve the bolt holes like
this....so the bolts fit flat, and there is no stress on
the bolts.

Now....see how easy that was....

See this rear mount....it was designed for a single bolt
with a blind nut, to be held on with that little piece
of ply running across the rear of the fuse....

....not good enough for ol' Flyboy Dave.... :stupid:

I recently had a wing come off my Ultra Stick .40....
(lawn dart)....so now I beef 'em up....in order to rip
this wing off....you'll have to rip out both sides of
the fuselage as well....

Do your stab in a similar manner....make 'em strong.

Dave.

Default The rear stab is easy....

...glue some spruce rails into the fuse where stab fits
on....then screw down the stab.

This technique is good for smaller planes and i have used that on many, but what I am talking about is a bolt going through the wing and tube to hold it from sliding out of socket and off the plane.

Default A wing tube....

....that's a different story. There are different ways to
hold them on. One way is to epoxy the tubes into each
wing....and use a center section ....made of wood, or
aluminum that is "shouldered", and the wings slide into it.
Then the wing is fastened to the fuse sides with locking blocks....like this....

....or wood is set into the wings, and bolts are used
from inside the fuse to hold the wings on.

I guess you could run bolts through the wing....into the
tubes....but that wouldn't hold the wings tight to the
fuse....

It's a Sony Mavica MVC-FD100....I like it because it
uses the floppy disc, as well as the memory stick....
has a good sized viewing screen, and takes mpeg
movies as well. It's only 1.2 megapixel...but has
zoom....and macro....which will take a picture 2 inches
from an object. It's easy to use, and didn't cost a
fortune....
