An LRP Quantum esc and a high turn motor like any 27t or higher. I don't think there'll be much difference between all the brands out there. These will last a while and aren't insanely fast. So once you get good at driving it you can upgrade to something faster down the road.

No, the lower the # of (t)urns the faster it is..........but at a cost of more maintenance and more battery drain. These days it just isn't smart to buy low turn brushed motors because the amount of maintenance required is crazy. For example, a 10t brushed motor would only last a few runs before it needs rebuilding. This is where brushless comes into play........higher power and very little maintenance.

If you keep an eye on the hobbt shops, you can get a decent brushless set up fo not much cash.
I use Novak Havoc esc and a 17.5 motor in a tc3 and it's plenty fast. The nice thing is the hole set up, motor and esc can be had for around $150.00. I have even seen some set up's cheaper on EBay. There is a guy on there that sells a LRP combo for right at $100.
My way of thinking is why go brushed now when you plan on doing brushless later on, it's not too much more cash to do the brushless thing now.
