What's the verdict on these?
Hi,
I was looking around on E Bay this morning and came acrossed these two struts from a Hong Kong Vendor, They look mothing like I've never seen before. So what do you guys think?
They do look kinda cool but might be over complicated in design.
1. Dual Rudder :

2. Single Rudder center mount :

RE: What's the verdict on these?
I bought the single rudder from this vendor a while back for my new cat build. However mine was a bit different in that it has a skegged strut. This one doesn't have the skeg. Don't know if it will make a difference? The quality of Johnny's stuff is very good and he sends stuff out quickly. Have bought a lot of items from him with no problems at all. What kind of boat are you building? My deep-V has dual rudders and I like them as well but my cat is getting the single rudder. Really like the looks of that single rudder from him thats why I bought it....Cheers.

Welcome to the forum firstly
As you mention - they look to be an overly complicated design. Looks like the tierods are redundant - they might offer a little support but realistically an unsupported rudder works perfectly fine. I would just want to be sure there was no chance of either end coming off the rod because it would make a mess of your prop if it were to fall.
They dont look bad though - kinda cool to me. I cannot make any claims as to quality of construction having never had one in hand.
I have tie rods on one of my fountains that are 100% for support. http://imageevent.com/justaddwata/26...=0&w=4&s=0&z=4

looked at these myself but from the picture it looks like the strut is going into
the back of the hull .
was going to put 2 of the centre mount rudders on a mono with a gearbox an a inline zen.

RE: What's the verdict on these?
The tie rods on the single rudder serve no purpose other than for looks. The rudder has a good pin in it so it is a very strong set-up without the tie rods. I can't comment on the dual rudder design although it looks like it actually bolts to the transom? Again I bought mine purely for the different look than every other single rudder design out there....

RE: What's the verdict on these?
I like the idea of the water pickup in the bottom of the strut. Water pressure would not be rudder angle dependant and it looks like the water must pass around the strut bushing keeping it cool.
Like others have said it looks to be overbuilt. Perhaps you could leave some of the unessary tie rods off.

RE: What's the verdict on these?
Just took another look at that. The single and dual are almost the same. The reason for the tie rods is that the arms for the rudders swivel on the mounting bracket. If you're thinking of single rudder I'd by the dual as you would then have a spare rudder. You could also use it to test between dual and single rudder operation with just a few minutes needed to swtich between the two. Well thought out I like it!
