Default Great planes yak 54 25%

I've purchased the arf great planes yak 54 25% and would like to know what every one thinks would be a good "budget" set up as far as servos, engine, spektrum receiver, servo extensions, batteries, voltage regulator and such. Also if any one already has one of these birds set up and has additional tips on set up or equipment. I've decided to go with the DLE 55 as far as power plant. Well thanks in advance for all the help

Thinking of "budget" buys on this type/size of airplane may not be the best thing. I just finished building this Yak with a Fuji 43. May be a little underpowered compared to a 50 or 55 cc, but I don't do any 3-D type flying...basic aerobatics.

Instead of the standard JR or Spektrum 821 digital servos, I went with Hitec 5645 metal-gear, two ball bearing servos (164 oz. in of torque at 6.0volts). With good servos, don't skimp on the linkage. I made up 3/16" carbon fiber tubes with 4/40 titanium rod-ends (from Abell RC) all the way around. Using LiFe batt packs, two at 3200 mah, one for ignition and one for receiver. heavy-duty battery packs and servo extensions all the way around. 42% products optical ignition switch and regulator for ignition battery. Nothing inexpensive about the equipment I put in this ship, but also not the most expensive, either.

Your aircraft will only be as good/strong/reliable as the weakest or cheapest item you put on it. With larger aircraft and the potential for damage/injury, it's just not worth trying to trim the budget too tightly. You can go with even stronger servos if you'd like, but then you're flirting with the "law of diminishing return." Overkill is always a possibility. If you're going to build larger aircraft, you are going to need a larger budget. At our flying field, I sure hope that if someone is flying a larger aircraft, they've put in at least adequate equipment. And for that matter, even if a .40 size airplane, I hope the pilot/builder has used at least nominally acceptable equipment.

If you've got the money and time to be in this hobby, with the potential for accident/damage/injury that is always present in our activities, it just doesn't make sense to think of "budget." Think of finding very good quality equipment at the best price possible and understand that for some items, you're going to pay more than you would for a .40 size ship. There's enough potential for equipment and airframe failure for even the most elaborate and expensive equipment. Don't multiply this factor by looking for marginal equipment.

I appreciate the info with setup. What I mean by budget is not being cheap but smart with my money. I'm not lookng to "skimp" on anything. As an example: I have been told by some individuals with the same plane that the Hitec servos that you mentioned are not any good, that they are cheap and wont center correctly. At the same time those are the servos I am planning on using, I cant spend $150 or more per servo and I have seen and flown other large scale planes with those. I'd like more info on the electronic set up you are mentioning, I like the idea of the LiFe batteries alot. Can those be charged with a regular lipo charger? is it worth upgrading ignition systems on a DLE 55? What spectrum/JR reciver would individuals use? Also would it be better to ue 1 hi torque (ultra) for the rudder t se up pull-pull or the dual tail rudder servo set up reccomended for the gas engine set up?
THanks for all the help

The DLE 55 is a gr8 motor, starts easily and runs well. Many DA50 lovers are switching to this engine. With the DLE you get the RcExl ignition. Get their opto kill as well. I have their digital tacho, hall sensor tester and adjustor as well.

Power HD 9150, DS120, or 1501 are all great servos - low cost but great power and they work. There are many threads on RCU and Flying Giants where you will find people using these in Giant scale - I learnt from them.

2 x 2300 mAH LiFe are enough for the Rx - 3200 is way too much. And IMHOuse regular 2000+ mAH NiMh 4.8V for the ignition.

In my setup the power box evolution is an overkill - you may use fromeco wolverine our power box smart switches. Basically you need to couple 2 batts smartly - and have a redundancy.

Default RE: Great planes yak 54 25%

I have this Yak.
Sorry to say but I think it is a very heavy plane and is highly wing loaded. I would use the DLE-30, not the 55 to keep the weight down. I plan on getting a DLE-30 for mine. I have taken out my DA-50 and am putting it in my GP Ultimate Bipe which is an excellent plane with lots of wing area. The DA-50 has plenty of power - but I really do not like a heavily wing loaded plane. So to me, the real challenge is one of weight more than anything else.
It needs a fairly strong aileron servo - or at least one with a tight deadband. The HS-645's I used were not suitable and I had a lot of flutter. I also used them on the rudder and elevator and they seemed okay. I will try HS-5625's when I get it ready to fly again- I just do not like the 645's they have no "stiction" to hold them in place. I use the stock GP hardware, it is fine and if you don't like it you can always upgrade it later. For Batteries I use 2, 1700 mah NIMHs. I always use a remote engine kill switch.
The plane has killer looks and tracks very well. It frequently gets compliments at the field.
Here is a cool [link=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wo4JwMO8DG4&feature=related]video[/link]

Good Luck!

Though it looks like this thread has pretty much expired, I wanted to see how everyone's Yaks are flying this year. Mine is flying well on the Fuji 43, will do any IMAC maneuver, but not a 3-D bird...wasn't intended to be. Had one bounced landing that broke the landing gear mounting plywood, so reinforced with additional plywood and am adding a TNT 6061 aluminum gear, which should give much more support than the OEM gear.

Otherwise, it's been a good flyer, even with the Fuji (boat-anchor) and a pound+ of lead in the nose. May start taking some weight out, however.

Thanks for the info, I am hoping to assemble mine within 2 months. I am still leaning towards the DLE55 as the power plant. I have decided to go with HiTec for servos.

I just got mine back in the air this weekend with my Brillelli 46 and new HS-5625 servos on the wings. There was no flutter with these servos like there was with the 645's. The difference in my mind is the tight deadband on the digitals. The torque is the same.
Big difference in power between the B46 and the DA50, but both are about the same weight. The B46 gave me fits getting it started. Turns out the pulse line had a crack in it.
I am using new Elite 1700mah Nimh batteries from cheapbatterypacks.com. A 4 cell for the engine, a 5 cell for the receiver.
Using Dubro cowl mounts for the cowl. These things are not worth the money. They easily strip out, the rubber washers do not last and they are easy to lose.

Good Luck!

Finally have gotten around to building my Yak. I had to return the Hitec servos I purchased b/c they would not center so instead went with Futaba all around. I am currently shopping for a pitts muffler b/c I do not belive that the stock DLE 55 muffler will fit correctly under the cowl. I do have an engine mounting question if any one has this particular plane, the lines on the firewall are for mounting all engines? or only to be used as reference for the Fuji?

More equipment arrived today! Kill switch, drill jig for prop. I need to get fuel line barbs and I'm thinking of using ball linkages on the throttle arm.

I think mine is a budget set-up. OS 160, std servo on the throttle, hitec 7955 on the rudder and the rest are Hitec 645mg. Going to use twin switches and twin 1100-1700mah nicads. I did use good strong linkages, and the single rudder servo saves weight and location helps with the CG.

Im going with futaba servos 9551 low profiles in the wings, 9452 for elevators, and 9156 on the rudder set up pull-pull. I am currently preparing the DLE 55 for final mounting tomorrow. I will be using a single 2500mAH NiMh for radio, and a 2000NiMh for ignition. This plane will be my first gasser. I may have it all ready by sunday this week guess I'll just have to see how things go. I had trouble getting the hitec servos to center, thats why i switched to futaba.

Frankly I believe in a budget. All aircraft companys use one and determine if they can produce the plane on that given budget, along with alot of companys, and households.
I'm building a GW MX2 and it is on a budget, with this hobby the sky is the limit and I can easly tie 1500 up in it but I have a budget 900.
If I set a lower budget then I'd just have to spend more time shopping and looking for a deal

Thats right! you do have to shop around and look for things that fit your budget. I have done that with my 25% Yak 54 and the end result has been great so far. There are many, many options out there and its true, the sky is the limit. If you are willing to spend $1000 per servo you can, or you could look for something that will perfom the same and cost you much less. I did lots of shopping around and figured out what was best in my budget for my plane.

I wanted to share with ya all. I made a gas can today. It works for me and didnt cost a crap load like most I've seen out there these days. It wont cost you more than $30US to make. The picture shows all that I used to make it (It's a 1 gal blitz can). Pretty simple... just drill a hole to fit the brass retainer, screw nuts on tight, add your hose and retainers and fuel filter if you like. I attached the hand pump with velcro to the gallon tank. I loosen the cap a bit for vent before I crank the pump. I Hope its helpful.[img][/img]

Default RE: Great planes yak 54 25%

I have a question..I have several Carl Goldberg Great Planes 67" Yaks, bought 6, 3 yrs ago, when Tower discontinued them. Have 2 flying with Super Tigre 90's in them and they fly very well. Not enough power for extreme 3D, but the I'm not in to that. I changed the landing gear out to Carbon fiber, which  reduces landing bounce (makes 'em stick) &amp; attached with break away nylon # 6 screws which saves the plane on dead sticks. <div>
</div><div>My question is: Has anybody ever taken the wings from the next model size up, GP made a 77" 81" wing span model, and put on the 67" fuse?</div><div>
</div><div>The reason I ask is that I recently bought what I thought was a 67" CG GP Yak at the Perry swap meet. Got it home &amp; started building it &amp; the wings have two servo holes each; unlike the wings I have. After measuring, I figured out the guy had the wings off the bigger Yak on the smaller Yak!! He repositioned the mounting holes, etc &amp; it looks good!! BUT, where's the Center of Gravity ???? The smaller Yak calls for 4 1/2 to 5 1/2", The larger calls for 6" 1/4. </div><div>
</div><div>Looks like the guy had a 2 cycle on it (it had stand outs attached) so I put a SV 26 gasser on it. With the two 4.8 v bats up front &amp; a 12 oz empty tank (rudder servo is in standard place in fuse, throttle servo on left (Not moved) forward, it balances about on the wing tube or about 5 3/4" to 6" back from the LE at the fuse.  Does this sound right? Would like ya'll input before I maiden it. </div>

Can you contact the guy and ask him where he put the CG?

Usually the CG for aerobatic planes is around 27% of MAC (mean aerodynamic cord). Measure that at the wing root and give it a try.
IMO ...that's a short coupled bird now (compared to stock)and may not fly as you expect or want. Because the fuselage is shorter compared to the span it may wiggle like a snake in the air. Hope not for your sake.
Maybe that's why the guy sold those long wings?

Default RE: Great planes yak 54 25%

Ihad listed my airframe for sale on a few sites yesterday but, changed my mind and decided to keep it. It's such a great looking little bird and Ihave to know how it flies.
Ifound a good number of videos on youtube and it appeared to perform very well. Many folks have mounted a DLE55 ...the engine Ithought was too big. It certainly turns it into a 3D performer but, it's more engine than Ineed for normal aerobatics.
I also ordered a new engine. I found a very reasonably priced Turnigy 52cc gasser (side carb)on HKUSAfor a good price and decided to give it a try. Iplan to transfer all of the electrics from my Seagull Spacewalker II120 to the Yak airframe and sell the plane and engine.
I also found quite a few videos on this engine and it also appeared to perform well. I noticed quite a few 30cc sized birds with this engine flying 3D. The specs indicate it develops around 4.3hp and that should be plenty for the GPYak.

I'm in the middle of building a Seagull Yak 54 (63 inch span) and will install a 26cc RCGF engine on it. After Iget the GP Yak together, I'll have to decide which one to keep. Ireally like them both so, it's going to be a difficult choice. It will depend on which one flies the best.
Speaking of the RCGF engine; I put the 26cc (brand new) on the test stand yesterday and, once Igot fuel flowing to the carb, started it up. It's running great and idling fine and getting stronger already. Ineed to run a couple of tanks of fuel through it before Imount it. I think I'm going to like this engine.

You should have just saved your money and got something worth having (ex. Extreme Flight Yak). Yeah, more money for sure but words can't describe the flight, quality and craftmanship differences between the two!

I had the GP Yak years ago with a Brilleli 46 and it is not what a Yak should be! If all you can do is burn holes in the sky t hen you'll prob. be happy enough.
