Default Best way to connect two batteries

Danny,

I am in the process of finishing up a GP PW. I would like to know what you think would be the best way to setup dual batteries? I plan on using either two 1800's or 2000 mAH battery. I have 6 hitec 5645's for the control surfaces and two 537's for the throttle and choke. I have a 770 on order. What would be the best way to hook this up with two batteries?

Thanks in advance.

You can simply plug the second battery in to an open channel in the receiver. I would recommend using 2 switches, and also add a regulator such as part number CEL1255 that has a diode that will prevent one battery to drain the other in the event of a loss of a cell in one pack etc.

Thanks, but the 770 only has 7 channels. The model I am building needs the following

2 channels Ailerons
2 channels elevator
1 channel Rudder
1 channel Throttle
1 channel Choke

can I use a y harness and switches like the following picture?

Yes, you can do that as well. It would be advised to add a diode or a voltage regulator in between the switches and the Y harness to prevent one pack from draining the other.

Thanks, my hopefully last question

How and where do I put the diode or a voltage regulator?

Thanks in advance

In between the switch and the Y harness, before the Y harness, that way there is not a possibility of reverse draw on one of the batteries. You will need 2 of them.

Will a 3 Amp diode, such as a 1N5400, be fine or would a 6 Amp diode be better?

I would be interested to know the peak current which a receiver and 5/6 servo's could draw. It would obviously depend on the pack voltage, the types of servo and how much resistance the servo's had to overcome.

Does anyone know?

Regards,

Sarah

That is correct, it depends on the servo being used etc. At stall, most servos will draw 1 1/2 amps to 2 amps. It would be very unusual to have each servo stall at once, and generally if the servo is adequete for the plane, you will not stall a servo. But since it is best to plan for the worst case, with 6 servos you could draw up to 12 amps through the servos plus a little for the receiver itself and resistance of the system. That being said, a 6 amp diode would be a better option, or perhaps larger if one can be found.
