FEJ honeycomb owners PLEASE CHECK YOUR STABS
I got around to taking pictures of my F-14 stabs and I was surprised at how little reinforcement there was with the bolts that go through the pivot shaft... only a very thin piece of carbon fiber cloth. The bolts were also able to wiggle around in the hole as the honeycomb behind the thin carbon cloth was compressed. I do not feel FEJ's technique is adequate for a 50+ pound plane. I posted this in the F-14 thread, but I think all FEJ honeycomb owners need to know about this.

Dantly do you think a fix like this would work?
Drill a hole the size of the Hysol Mixing Nozzle up from the bottom of the stab into the area around the bolt bottoming out on the shaft. Then pump Hysol under pressure into the area around the bolt and shaft. Perhaps when cured it would eliminate the play? Permanently?

Yeah .. I don't want to get all political .. Just looking for a solution for guys who already have F-14's and want to still fly them knowing what to watch out for and how to fix it.
My F-14 is actually a Yellow Aircraft F-14 not FEJ. But the whole problem of slop in a Stabilator could alpply to a lot of different Jets. I think Dantly on this thread Just wants to give guys a Heads up and try and come up with solutions to prevent another tragedy.

And yet from the post I mentioned, someone else posted something, and you tell them to stop posting. Who do you think you are, Hitler?
I dont care if you make 100 more threads about this, just dont be doing it then telling others not to do the very thing you are doing.

How about you move on? This has does not impact you in any way. I am posting these pictures for people to see the internals of the stab, which I am in a position to do. This forum is about sharing our experiences. If you don't like it then fo elsewhere.

RE: FEJ honeycomb owners PLEASE CHECK YOUR STABS
Hi
Don´t you think it's relevant that FEJ F14 owners be aware of these issues?
Check the stabs is ok. What about wings?

RE: FEJ honeycomb owners PLEASE CHECK YOUR STABS
60Kg is 132.2 pounds . how many G force could be equal to 132Lbs ? for sure could be three times the weight of the airplane.
The question is, does manufactures take concern of the G forces when they design ours jets, are they fabricated to hold this amount of force? for sure most of them not.
My two cents ........

132.2lbs would be around 2G's for an airplane like the 1/7 F-14, entirely insufficient IMO! My F-14 is being designed for a 800lb force before failure (400lbs per wing half), or 10G's at 80lbs or 16G's at 50lbs. While it may be a wee bit heavier, it will be built to last!

I don't think the carbon cloth was applied correctly, but rather oversaturated which does not really help much. A good carbon reinforcement should be super stiff when cured. I have cut myself with rough edges in the past, that's how stiff it should be.

Hi
Posted this in other thread, but because this thread is about HC stabs, here it goes
Here are some pics from an A10 inside rear fuse. The first pic is from a regular lay-up with incorrect incidence original sent with the kit. The second one is HC with correct incidence later sent by FEJ.
The owner from this bird will have rear HC and front regular layup fuselage . Plus the paint does not match, so he's not that happy...
As you can notice there is no alu or carbon tube between the 2 half stabs. Remember that in the tip of each stab is attached a rudder with arround 1Kg.
In the later rear fuse there is a HC former, but behind it, there's no stab tube as well.
Draw your own conclusions.
Regards
Nuno

Wow ..
I bet he feels like a helictical plane wrapped around a vertical axis ... aka SCREWED.
I also like the way the glue is "professionally smeared" all over the bulkhead by a child's fingers. Finger Painting 101?
And the attention to details in the "neat" trimming of those holes in the carbon fiber! The work of a child. PRICELESS !!

I wasn't paying attention to FEJ then because they could not even get the landing gear to work on any of their planes.

Pity they could not get their act together.
Its not like the kits are cheap either.
I still cannot get why these should be so expensive anyway.
