Need help to Identify older Traxxas.. is this a Rustler? 2.5 ? year? What are details on engine, trans, capabilities? is this a brush ? it has 27 mhz AM Radio
Been so busy.. It stopped working quite a long time ago.. I thought it would need transmission rebuild.. turns out I just needed to adjust the gear in!
What extended batteries should I buy for it? Best prices.. probably ebay or?

Rustler..yes.
2.5...no. I believe the 2.5 is the nitro engine in the nitro Rustler.
Year...my best guess is mid~late 90's
That speed control is only rated for a 20T brushed motor at best.

The good news is that Rustler hasn't changed all that much, and you will be able to find and upgrade parts at will. I'm not quite sure on the transmission in your Rustler. I don't know if there is a ball diff or a gear diff in there. My Traxxas usage/knowledge is from ball diffed Eagle/Blue Eagle and the TCP buggy. Hopefully someone will chime in with info on your model at hand.

As for not wanting to dump too much $$$ into your RC, I would just keep using NiMh packs to power that brushed motor until it poops out on you. After that motor of yours stop running, you could upgrade the ESC to handle hotter motors (brushed or brushless) or continue with "old school" brushed motors...I would suggest using at least motors with open end bell so you can replace the brushes once they wear out.

Also, if you plan on upgrading to more powerful motors, you should upgrade those connectors you have on you Rustler/batteries/ESC/motor/charger.

Thanks, Yes I am going to keep this stock for the near future as I just jumped into a Quad Copter Video Hobby.
So I had $45 ebay bucks that were going to expire tomorrow..

So I just bought (2) Bias 8.4V 7 Cell 3000mAh Hump Pack NiMH Batteries new for $18 ea
& a DYNAMITE PROPHET PLUS AC/DC 4-7 CELL NI-CD & NI-MH Charger used for $20 (since my old Dynamite mega 1 will not charge the new NI-MH batteries properly)
Will those batteries and charger work OK?
What kind of speeds will I get with the new batteries?

I think you did you a good job at getting the batteries/charger you need to get up and running again. I especially like the connectors (Deans or Deans style connectors are my favorite) that come with the batteries...in case you ever upgrade your ESC/motor. As for the charger...it should be simple, yet effective.

Speed? All depends on your gearing. But you will definitely see a power boost with using those 7 cell packs . My best guess at a number would be... 20+ mph.

Let me just say, you have a RC platform (the Rustler) that has been around (what seems like forever) for a long time. I see the Rustler being around for many years to come. You can make it as mild, or take it as wild as you want it to be.

Maybe for some little inspiration down the road, take a look at what one person has gone through (to the extreme) to make his Traxxas Rustler a one-of-a-kind.

Thanks for link, Nice "ultimate" rig! must be fun to drive that for sure.
One thing I took from that page; I want to try balancing the wheels, as it seems to have a lot of vibration..that maybe caused the gear to come out of adjustment before?
Also Thinking about lubing the transmission? I heard someone say it should be done once every 6-12 months?
This car looks in overall good shape, nothing broken, clean inside, original tires, components maybe even the plastic gears?
Maybe it had little use?
It has been in a closet for 7+ years! Are there any tell tale signs to see if transmission needs a lube job? Do you know of any good links or vids for this?
Also any good Gopro mounts suggested for a rustler ?

That sounds about right for a Traxxas 272 transmission.
Only thing to do after something has been sitting for so long...open 'er up.

Unless someone changed it, its going to have a gear diff. As long as you don't go crazy with power, you won't have to do much to it. The new ones are brushless with better radios and ball bearings, but not really much else. Its was a great design from the outset, so Traxxas pretty much left it alone.
Mine started out like yours, but has evolved over the years to a brushless street machine.
