MGT 4.6 upgraded
For those on AE's forum know who I am, and have prob. seen this thread.. I am posting this hear to get others ideas and thoughts of my build:
Ok after getting my used 4.6 for a great deal, I decided to upgrade the engine to the LRP .30, so I decided to upgrade the tranny to the 8.0........
Shown in pics: New 8.0 tranny, new LRP .30, new 8.0 chassis, new body for the 4.6, paint and other misc. items........ Not shown are my new 23mm adapt. and tire setup that I will be adding to the rebuild as well......... I also plan on adding an extra fuel tank since I know the LRP engine is gonna suck up nitro quick.... Oh and I was finally able to find some Byron's 20% fuel at a hobby shop down the hill from where I live....
Got a few things done:
1. LRP .30 Engine Sealed
2. MGT 8.0 Tranny test fitting with stock 4.6 engine and then just to see how it looks with LRP engine
3. New Wheels and tires
4. Dual tanks (just test fitted tank)
Need to do:
1. Finish installing 8.0 tranny
2. Install 2nd tank, and run hosing via t fittings
3. Install LRP .30
4. Paint New Body
5. Clean entire truck before final assembly, and then put everything together and break it in......
Due to work and me having two other projects I'm working on, this one is gonna take some time, as far as the other two I'll post pics of those when I'm done ;-)
Updated 5/1/09
1. Got LRP .30 installed
2. second tank installed, but going to use one tank first to break in the engine
3. roll cage on
Still need to:
1. paint body
2. break in engine
3. install hosing for dual tanks
4. clean entire truck

RE: MGT 4.6 upgraded
i just finished a COMPLETE rebuild on my used 4.6 and it was a TON of work (and money of course!) personally, instead of bolting things on, i would start taking things apart. there was no way i could have cleaned the truck the way it needed to be cleaned if i tried to work on it one section at a time. plus, the deeper i dug, the more stuff i found that needed attention! the drivetrain slop was atrocious! she got new diff cups, tranny cups, cvd rebuilds, cva's replaced, everybearing, cleaned & relubed or replaced, the shocks all needed cleaning & refill, some had to be rebuilt, diffs rebuilt, etc. i rebuilt my tranny, but the 8.0 would have been a more solid choice. "the dude's" tranny cups & hinge pin mounts are awesome! the rcscrews ss kit is worth every penny! i didn't know a thing about mgt or nitro, yet now i know every bolt on the truck after the rebuild. it makes tuning & troubleshooting a breeze.
do you like your stand? im diggin' mine!

Yeah I planned on taking everything apart and cleaning it, but with work and other things going on it would take me 4-ever to finish it, and I'm to impatient since I want to see how the LRP .30 rips....... I will give it a good cleaning this summer since I'll be taking vacation, and I will also be adding new shocks, cvd's, and a-arms etc.............
Yeah the stand is great, especially since I got it for free lol.........

RE: MGT 4.6 upgraded
yea, i don't blame ya! my rebuild started out as a simple diff relube... next thing i knew, i had a box full of parts & a healthy tower/a-main order! i was so anxious to run it after 3 weeks of downtime, it was painful to stop and take photos before i dirtied it back up!

i can see your roll cage is not on properly, i had the same problem all you have to do is get a dremel or something that melts plastic good. you saw off where the mounts are being blocked

Looking good. I too was tinkering with the MGT this weekend and put a new Axial .28 Spec I engine on. Broke it in. WOW the sleeve was tight. Wasn't going anywhere without the heat gun warming that head up. 4 tanks through it now and its a little looser.. but still needs a heat gun. I bet this engine roars for a long while, temp controlled. Check it!
