Ace RC 1/3 Scale Weeks Special (Pitts)

RE: Ace RC 1/3 Scale Weeks Special (Pitts)
Ken,
I do not know of an aftermarket alternative for the cowl. Didi you check Fiberglass Specialties? You are right, that cowl is kind of a beast. Do you think that an aftermarket would be lighter? What else did you do to lighten this plane up during your build?
I am finishing up another project and then will dig into this plane. I've decided to do the kermit weeks scheme. That is most likely a ways off though. I am kind of slow, or just too busy. Probably a combination of both.

Thanks guys for the cowl links. I guess I did not word the question correctly. I do know where to find the cowl, I was wondering about the difference. Big Bird, is that your cowl? Is there a big difference in weight between the two? The one that came with mine must weight 2lbs and is pretty bullet proof.
Brady,
Here are some pictures of the weight reduction I have done. The fuse has been lightened considerably. It was supposed to be solid sheet sides. All the formers have been hollowed and the triple laminated firewall lost about 40% of its weight. Difficult to explain, but each firewall section is completely different to save weight. Also the wing ribs have been hollowed and the wing tips (not completed) have been cut out for a big weight savings. Also have new landing gear on the way.
While not to save weight, the firewall, formers for the cabane, and landing gear block have all been pinned as well. I have also built in flying wire attachment points and plan on using a functional Kevlar wire setup.
I am not planning on this plane to be a 3D plane, just too much extra weight that’s unnecessary. With all the extra work I’ve done I would really hate to stick that cowl on the front of this thing.

RE: Ace RC 1/3 Scale Weeks Special (Pitts)
Hi,
Just picked up a 1/3 scale Ace Weeks Special "fixer-upper". The model is complete, with the exception of the interplane struts. No plans, either, so I was wondering if anyone out there had a set of plans that could scan/trace and scan the plan view of one of these struts and email it to me. Also, whereabouts is the CG supposed to be on this model? Finally, is incidence of the top and bottom wings the same?
Thanks for any help.
Ed

Guys,
Found this pic. It is not a direct bottom picture but I think you can see from the pic that the top wing / tail scheme appears to be repeated on the bottom surfaces. I just picked up one of these planes covered in Coverite but not to the original scheme. I am thinking of recovering to the original scheme and lightening the airframe a bit at the same time.

Awesome mooredj! Will be using that when I get to covering mine.
Really would appreciate you posting your lightnening process. I would like to incorperate it into my build.

GravityKing Look about six posts up. I was going to start with some of the ideas by Ken-h and see what that led to. I might not get to this for a couple of months. I was also looking for a set of plans and instructions if anyone still has a set they would either sell or copy for me.

You are in luck! I haven't started mine yet and it came with an extra set of instructions, which aren't much, you could have and for the expense of it all I would be glad to copy the plans for you.
I have no idea the cost or for sure where to get it done. We have a Staples here but other than that civilization is 30 miles away. I could check into it.
Have to finish the project I have going. Just been rounding up engine and parts and doing research.

RE: Ace RC 1/3 Scale Weeks Special (Pitts)
After I posted the request for plans above I was looking on Ebay and came up with this: http://www.ebay.com/itm/360502938646...84.m1423.l2649
These are the correct plans and instructions. The plans are made by Miles Reed, which the ACE kit was built off of. I also figured out that I have the instructions - not much there but I was thinking of scanning the 3-view at the back of the instructions and posting it here.
Thanks for the offer on making a copy for me. I appreciate it. I figure I might go the Ebay route as the templates are included and I have an extra Fiberglass Specialties cowl that came with the plane. If I ever get the itch to build another one it might come in handy to have the templates. Fiberglass Specialties also caries the canopy and wheel pants.

Good for you. eBay is the greatest place to find off the wall stuff.
I will be buying a glass cowl for mine when I get to the build so if you decide to get rid of yours let me know.

I hope that's all you lost.
I can make you the same offer as I did for mooredj or check with him when he gets the ones he ordered from eBay for authenticity.

The plans off of eBay are the real deal. I got my copy and for what you are getting it is a good price. A copy of the original plans used to construct the ACE kit. The CG point is on the plans. I also can scan a copy of the instructions if needed and pass them on.

I know this is an old thread but I am in desperate need of the fuselage plans for this as my kit had two sets of wing plans and no fuse page. It is impossible to build it without them. Ace no longer exists and Thunder Tiger that purchased them has wing plans only. Cheers Garry.
