Hanger 9 Taylorcraft

Default Hanger 9 Taylorcraft

I bought a Hanger 9 Taylorcraft with a Homelite 30cc conversion with a C&H ignition. Seems under powered to me. Was thinking of a Zenoah G38 with the C&H igniton on it. Anybody run this set-up? and can tell me anything about it. I have looked up the threads, but Have not found a flight report on this set-up.

Hangar 9 only recommends a G23 for that plane (gas), 1.48 2 stroke or 1.80 4 stroke (glow). Going with a G38 is probably going to be too much engine. I saw that TV show on R/C with the wierd host and he built one with a G23 and smoke and did some pretty good things with it.

G23 max! I wish horizon would bring this plane back in a 50cc size, 110" WS maybe. I really wish I bought one of these.

Lanier still makes a kit for the Taylorcraft. It can be built as 1/4 scale with 108" w/s or clipped wing at 83.5" w/s. It flies great with any 23 to 30cc gas engines. G-38 is a little of an overkill.

I bought one from a club member with a G-23 on it and it could barely get off the ground, matter of fact, it didn't. Built new one with a Saito 182 twin and it has plenty of power and a wonderful sound. Great for a Sunday flyer.

3w 24. Actually the g23 is a very easy to operate engine and easy to start, just put a 40 size starter on it and it turns over real easy. no battery to charge to make it run. I have seen a couple of these and owned one myself, the muffler you use can kill this engine, any mods to the stock muffler can kill it. I have seen a couple different configurations of "stock" mufflers and one seemed to outperform the other. Since your considering the g38 I would look into the troybuilt motor mentioned above but also look into the small 3w engines. that little 24 swings a pretty good sized prop if I remember right. I think they even have a little 40 or 42 or something. Whatever the size it will have more power so it could transition into a larger range of airplanes latter on.

It's hard to believe a 30cc glow twin has more power than even the Zen 23cc gas. I put a Saito 300 twin in a 27% CAP and it barely got off the ground. I bet it did sound better however, there is nothing like the sound of a twin glow!

I have done alot of reserch here, and the G23(26) will fly it scale but have nothing extra if you need it.

I have flown two of them. One with a G23 and one with a Saito 1.80. The G23 pulls it around fine, but will not give it unlimited flight. From level flight you probably had 200' vertical line then a real pretty tail slide. The 1.80 gives it pretty much un-limited vertical and flys it really good on the KMP 44" floats.
I would go with a MVVS 1.60 or a G26 if you want to stay with gas.

I know another club member that put a G45 in his and it was a PIG. Way too much weight.

I know a G26 will fly the plane very scale, I was just looking for a little more power. As far as weight, I figured a G38 with electronic ignition would way about the same.

I have a Homelite 30cc conversion with a C&H ignition on it now, It will fly the plane, very, very scale, Thgis is my first giant, and I would just like a little extra power in reserve.

Just for the record, I installed a RCS 1.80 with rear carberator and electronic igniton and at half throttle, I am flying faster then scale.
This engine will pull the plane through all that the plane itself is capable of.

I have a H9 taylorcraft with a 46cc engine(poulan converted) 20x10w apc prop most wonderful plane. Im a 3d fan and i love this big babby It will preform all arobatics high alpha included lands like a feather. couldnt be happier, needs a 22x8 but thers no apc must be careful about big engines and speed. our club president downed his TC with a bt50 fugi 20x10 wood prop. made horizontal and vertical stabs flutter so bad the elevator came off.

A 23-26 cc is perfect for this plane as long as you don't over-load it with oversize servos and batteries. I've built 7 of them and used the Saito 180's. 23 and 26 gas engines. You don't have to spend a lot of money on the gassers either. I still have two of them nib that I bought when I saw that they were going to be discontinued. Have fun!

I've put an MVVS 26 gas in mine. No balance problems with 4.8v NiCd as far up front as possible.

I put an Evolution 26GT in the Hangar 9 SuperCub, which is very similarly sized, and has the same recommendations for power, and it's a great engine for it. It doesn't ahve unlimited vertical or anything like that, but it pulls it around with authority, and has plenty of power for anything you could ask of the plane.

/ I had one of these a few years ago w/ a ZDZ40, towed gliders w/ it. All the power you could ever need. Got rid of it and have hated that decision up until yesterday when I found one here locally new in box. Have a O.S. 160 twin that has needed a home for sometime now and I can't wait to get to work on her.
