Can a small airplane come and land at this airport during/before the event? If not, what other close airports are there? I'm planning to go visit my brother and then we would fly down on Friday or Saturday, depending on the weather.

Lakeland Airport has two active runways and there are many corp jets, tubroprops and other planes based there. Early march is also the height of the winter / spring visitor season and Major League Baseball Spring Training is goining on at that time. There will be plenty of room for anything you can manage to fly in on.
