Default Quadra 35 experts---many questions.

I have an opportunity to get a used one.

1.) What is a good price?
2.) Can you get a rebuild kit?
3.) Any performance upgrades?
4.) What sort of performance can I expect? RPM/Prop
5.) Over all opinion?
6.) Best fuel/oil?
7.) Best type of plane suited for this engine?

Thanks,
--Rick

http://www.bennettbuilt.com/ are the quadra dealer. However, Tower Hobbies sells a US 35 that is very close.

Enjoy,

Jim

It will turn 18" props around 7k. They are a little heavy as there are an old design. They will run forever though. If it has points, consider a points eliminator kit. They work real well in lightly loaded aircraft (cubs and such). I run my 40 (same as a 35) on 93 octane and Amsoil 2000 at 64:1, why because I run everything the same way. There are no performance upgrades I know of other than a velocity stack to prevent fuel spitting out of the carb. Price, $50 to maybe $200 depending on condition and run time. $100 to $150 is not a bad price for a GOOD used engine. Some sell for much less.

I have two Quadra 35s. I have literally flown the tread off the wheels on one plane I had one on, many many many flights. Good engines, I use Amsoil 1-100 like the bottle says. Never any problems. Only thing I have done to either one is rebuild carb once in a while. Oh ya and I replaced the ignition coil on one, it was origionally a points ignition and when I wore out that coil I replaced it with the newer electronic ignition coil with no points. Basically I feed them fuel and fly. One is on a 70 inch biplane (an enlarged Hog Biplane) The other until recently was on a 91 inch roadrunner. I run a 18/6-10 prop on the biplane and was running either a 18/8 two blade or 16/10 three blade on the other. If you decide you don't like it just send it to me I'll gladly find a home for it. I think you will like it. Have fun Ron

I do not like them I have had one since new and mine is toast now because the needle bearings run on the crank shaft so if you need new bearings then you also need a new crank. All the bolts in the thing have hardly any threads so mine has about 7 helicoils in it. Personaly I like my ryobi better.

A Q35 would fly it no problem at 14lbs if that includes the motor. Depending on how you fly, you'd be good upto 18lbs or so. I have a Q40 in a 100", 20lb Rearwin Speedster and it's over powered for this type of plane.

Crash:
Just a tough reliable engine. I have half a dozen and the highest compression one is the oldest one I have, bought in the mid 70s. Q52 firewall bolt pattern is the same but would be overpowered and quite a bit more nose heavy. Will be a good match with the 35. I have an Ercoupe, among others, about the same size and does mild aerobatics.
