It gets me how many people make plane's not repairalble after a crash. I love trash cans and carnage, oldest plane flying is 46yrs.
The ones I love are the ones that pull the engine out of the mud, and start turning it over. Now that is really scary! Worst thing you could do.

So many variables that it is hard to say what to do. Good advice I got once says to take a large leaf bag to the field all the time. After the smash pick up all available parts, place them in the leaf bag and put it under the bench for any time up to a week. Remove the wreckage from the bag and spread it out on the bench. It may be less damaged than first appearances showed. If it isn't too bad fix it. You can scrap a model any time but you can't fix it if it's still out at the field in a trash can. Repairing an ARF due to their haphazard construction and covering may not be worth the trouble but if it's only a damaged wing or other replacebable part you can often buy another rather than discard everything including the good pieces.

Years ago before I had a lot of kits, I would take the wreck home because it always looks worse right after you did it. Come back a few days later and it could usually be fixed.

There are a lot of easy fixers that get pitched. Good for the next guy to open the garbage can though.

When I was a kid, that was the first thing I would do would be to look in the garbage can at the field. Funny how things change.

Yes, the time of a crash is not the time for rash decisions. Well said guys.

I heard of a guy up north that crashed (tip stalled) a nice Spitfire on its maiden. He was so ticked that he threw the TX in the back of his truck as hard as he could. It blew up in a million bits.

For me, doing a fix after somebody else's misfortune isn't too bad... we just dig in and do it.

Fixing my own planes is another story. I'm even worse about putting off fixing one of my planes than I am about covering somebody else's (and I know some of you know first hand.... that's pretty bad!)

When I crash a plane it takes a great deal of effort for me to fix it - I'd rather start all over and build the ENTIRE plane than fix the 'less' fortunate....even if the fix would only require 1 - 2 hours of work vs. the 40+ in building the kit AGAIN!

How many out there in modeling land agree with my thinking?

Jerry
I definitely agree. I hate taking bashed up planes to the field. I don't mind that they look used and have some hours on them, but when they look patched up they're embarrasing. Some people say that adds character, but for me it's just a plane that looks like junk. I may not rebuild the whole plane, but if the damage is bad enough I'll rebuild the damaged components.

Some people think you patch all the peaces in to the plane. Wrong you keep all the peaces to get the basic part you have to replace . My idea is that it will fly as good as it looks , and it will look as good as it is built. My planes look as good as the day they were first flown and soom look better I guess trash can pride and limmited CASH makes a difference.
