Default Increased ding resistance - 1.5 oz. glass cloth vs. .75 oz.?

Any of you guys using the heavier 1.5 oz. cloth to cover your scale projects?
I've only used the .5 - .75 oz. cloth in my finishes, but recently got a sample of the 1.5 oz. and got to thinking that the use of a heavier cloth would decrease the hanger dents? I imagine the same amount of epoxy resin would be required to fill the weave.

Comments?

Thanks Guys!

Nick

I was told that he weight of the cloth actually refers to the amount of resin it will absorb, so it would weigh more.

Glass doesn't do much for ding resistence. It provides a good base for the finish and strengthens the structure slightly. 1.5 ounce cloth is going to make for a very heavy finish because, as you said, it will absorb a lot more resin and primer.

Personally, I won't buy anything heavier than .5 ounce cloth any more. Last time I bought cloth the guy talked me into .7 ounce even though I wanted .5 and have used it many times. I'm really sorry I bought it now. I can tell a big difference in the amount of liquid finish needed to seal it and the weight. 1.5 ounce is more than twice as heavy as stuff I think is too heavy already. It's your choice, but if you hit your plane on the car door, the cloth isn't going to help much.

Now if you're sole concern is ding resistence, maybe you should consider Kevlar.
