What is the purpose of the caps on the motor? The motor is a 370 with two caps on the power posts, both are marked 473. One got broken, does it have to be replaced with an idetntical cap? [&:]

Hi dje7447

Based on what I know, the capacitor is/are to:
1 - ElectroMagnetic Field Interference (EMF) reduction.
2 - Back fire High Voltage Bypass and to reduce spark/arch on your brushes.

Your capacitor should be a ceramic type (coin shape). I don't know why your motor uses different value of capacitance. Normal value is 104 (0.1uF) If you want to replace the damage one, plz get the same type or at least same Farad value.

To read ceramic capacitor, the first 2 value is the farad value and the 3rd value is the power value for 10. (Similar to resistor).

So 104 = (10 * 10^4) * (10^-6) = 10 * 10^-2 = 0.1uF

Then for 473 = (47 * 10^3) * (10^-6) = 47 * 10^-3 = 0.047uF
