I usually use pin hinges in all my surfaces and have been faced with an ordeal for quite some time now. I vaseline the hinge at the hinge point, and glue (lately I've been using the gorilla glue) the hinges in place. Then I scrape any excess glue that has expanded off the hinge which is really no problem. The problem I have, even though I've tried alcohol, acetone, MEK, I can't seem to remove the vaseline enough from the surfaces that surround the hinge, to get a good bond when I try to seal the hinges with either monokote or ultra coat. Any one have tried and true method to totally remove vaseline from a surface?

Dawn dish soap or the likes it cutts grease pretty good

I am curious. Why not cover first and put the hinges in after the surfaces are covered?

No, it's not the covering. It's the 1/2" piece that I run all along the gap, both top and bottom to seal the control surfaces. Dish soap hun? Good idea.. I'll give that a try the next time. Sounds like a good idea.

IMO there is no bonus from sealing both hinge surfaces other than cosmetic.
Aerodynamically, a single sealed surface does its trick nicely.
I guess from grass fields maybe it would keep any junk out
but the benefits of a single, bottom surface seal is probably enough

I think, if done right, it just looks good. That's why I do both sides.
