I've heard of this idea and I'm going to try it, however, I'm not sure what the best method is to install the servo and control ends into the shaft. What have you found that works the best?

There are many ways to secure the metal rod to the arrow shaft. First you can buy inserts specially designed for this purpose. Or you could use a piece of dowel or nyrod.
I first drill a small hole about a 1/2 inch from the end of the arrow shaft. The hole goes through only one wall of the shaft. I then bend a SMALL 90 degree bend in the metal rod. Then check the fit and make sure the metal rod fits into the arrow shaft and the bent end will stick up through the hole you drilled in the arrow shaft.
If this works OK, you just need to find a way to secure the rod in such a way that the bent end of the metal rod doesn't work out of the hole in the shaft. Personally I use a piece of inner Nyrod around the metal rod as a spacer and puch the metal rod/nyrod into the arrow shaft then CA. You could also use a dowel or a piece of brass or copper tubing.
