Default Questions about fantom fr18

I just puchased a fantom fr18 and I have a few question. What color is you cooling head? All the pictures I saw it had aPurple or red head and I got an chrome one. Also the glow plug hole and glow plug thread is bigger than it is supposed to be. I bought mc59 plugs and they were to small, they won't screw in. Any help would be appreciated.

I have never heard of a plug not being able to screw in. I've used os and traxxas plugs in my fantom .18 without any problems. All the fantom .18's I've seen have a red cooling head including mine. Did you buy this engine off of ebay or a hobby shop. I don't know of upgraded heads for the fantom but I would still think any rc car glow plug would fit in it. Only suggestion I have for you is to double check to make sure that you got a fantom engine and buy a bigger air filter for it like the motor saver one.

I bought the engine from stormer hobbies. The head is not red with 10 fins,it is chrome with 12 fins. It does say fantom fr 18 on it. The head and the glow plug are both bigger than they should be. I put the glow plug that came with it mext to the mc59 and it is bigger. Do big block engines use bigger glow plugs?

Man that is weird. Don't know what to tell you. I have used the same glow plugs in my pro .15, 2.5, fantom .18 and hyper .21. You might want to shoot out an email to fantom to see what the deal is.

I have a little advice for anyone who is thinking of buying a fontom. After posting this and waiting for the holiday weekend to end, I called stormer and fantom. They both told me all new fantoms will be coming with turbo heads. A regular button will be available but will not be out for a week or so. You will not see anything about this on any website because it was unannounced. Just a warning ir you order one order turbo plugs. I am out of luck because none of my local hobby shops carry them.

I know .18 is not a big block. They did not always come turbo. They, until recently, came with a red cooling head which used mc59 or os8 plugs. The one I got has a chrome head and is a turbo which obviosly can't use the two plugs metioned above. The manual however still reccomends those plugs which is where the confusion was. When I called they said they just started doing this and did not have chance to revise the manual. Stormer didn't even know about the change.

the new version has the chrome head. small and big blocks do use the same physical size plug unless it is a turbo plug which has more of a "v" shape at the bootm and won't fit a regular size combustion chamber(head button). if i remember correctly turbo plugs are the choice for onroad cars so i would spring for the standard combustion chamber(head button). these motors are very fast. i saw my first one racing last week and it was waxing some of the big block conversions. very responsive , held a tune well , and had consistent temps.

The Turbo plug itslef increases performance a little, but the problem wiht them, is that the coil in them are very fragile, and break easily, (not good for offroad) by buying the head button for regular plugs, u losse a small portion of performance, but not enought to be noticable.
