Crunch Time: Best Wood/Foam Arf for DA-100
For <= $1000, what is it?
I looked at the Chip Hyde 34% Extra... weight seems high for the wing area.
I want a QuiQue Yak, but I've seen NO info on that.
I think the H9 Arfs are better suited to a ZDZ-80 (I already have an Edge w/ and 80 in it).
So... what's your take? (I know this has probably been done before, but I want the most recent planes included).

Chips Extra may have a high weight for the wing area but it is really very similar to the CA line. Planes Plus has done the same. My point here is I have a 34% CA and I too thought the wing area was low for the weight. 27 lbs and approx 1750 sq in of area. It flies great! No tendency to fall out of the sky and it lands like a baby.

a used carden 35% extra would be great!!
also, take a look at the wild hare line. i competed against some guys lat year in imac with their 35% extra and a da 100. flew quite well.

What motor do you want to run? If you want to use a ZDZ-80 on in-cowl muffler, you'll want to have the plane under 25 lbs for best performance. For that, the 97 inch span H9 ARFs work very well. If you want to run a tuned muffler (Krumscheid), then you can go to one of the larger planes and it will fly well in the 28 lb range. If you use one of the 100cc twins (DA, ZDZ, 3W, BME-110), you'll get good performance in the 28-30 lb range.

The lightest ones that I know of are ARCs. Genovese Brothers DR109 and the RomanBuilt (formerly Troybuilt) Extra. They are also more$ than the wood ARFs coming from the far east. These two planes will be around 23 lbs as most people set them up with a 100cc twin. They are also larger than the H9 33% planes.

Giles - 18 lbs---not a kit but the cowl n canopy are kit pieces -from a H9 Extra -
So far I have yet to see any really light kits -and I don't blame the kit makers - when a new kit comes out - the first comments are always "the gear is not strong enough ".
On this one the gear is made from doubled 3/16 and 1/8 wire - far lighter than carbon fibre.
and it actually has spring qualities!

Sillyness,
You might consider the AirWild 35% Edge. It's 100% composite, is the best flying plane I've ever owned, lands like a trainer, and, best of all, is currently on sale. You can take a look at it at airwild.com.

It's an Edge though... not notorious for IMAC performance (stalls and spins especially). Besides... I already have a Hanger 9 Edge. If it was an Extra... I'd definitely have a look!!!

That's two votes for the Edge for IMAC. Do you have it? Do you fly unlimited? Does it snap and spin well?
