34% extra engine help.....
I have ordered a planes plus 34% extra. I don't want to spend more than $850 on an engine and mufflers. I am looking at 3 different engines. First Place Engine's 5.8, Brison 5.8, or ZDZ 80. This is my first large plane. I have a DPM Edge with a moki 2.10 in it and it hovers it at about 3/4 throttle. I just wanted to make sure that one of these engines will be enough power for this platform (hover it with some pullout), and that it isnt to heavy like the brison and FPE. Any one have suggestions please let me know..... thanks.....

Like EPC said, a used 3W-100 with mufflers ($700-800). I don't see used DA-100 motors in the same range - their owners must believe they don't wear out....
You can also buy a used ZDZ-80 single (more power than the engines which use the 5.8 Makita cylinder and piston), and add a Krumscheid tuned muffler 89-V with a 12 inch header. The K&S muffler will fit the Extra (I checked the fit myself), and the power will match the 3W-100 on in-cowl mufflers.

If you can get the Brison 5.8 with the mechanical advanced ignition, you should go for it. Less vibration and a better mid range than the auto advance. With the Brison you know you have an engine that will last forever and that it has plenty of power.

RE: 34% extra engine help.....
If I went with the ZDZ or the Brison about what throttle setting would it take to hover it roughly? They say weight with a DA100 is around 25.5 lbs with 1/4 scale servos in the wing, and tail. Weight with a zdz 80 single is supposed to be 24.5 with same servos... So might be able to keep it around 24 with regular servos.

You're best bet for that answer would be to contact Gary Allison at Brison engines to determine what thrust levels will be available with what props. He has a pretty good handle on what his engines will do. The prop selected will have a tremendous influence on what any engine can do.

The hangar 9 33% planes are around 26lbs flying I think. What throttle setting are they at with a 80cc, or 95cc motor to hover? Just curious... Also what other motors are out there for under 800.00 that will fly a 33% plane with some authority?
