Default JHH Cougar... Does it fly?

A friend of mine dusted off an old JHH Cougar with a Golden West turbine and is actually planning to fly it...[8D] Anyone with experience with this jet. I know the GW is a low thrust/high thirst turbine (Had two of them) but have no experience with the airframe.

CG location would be helpful also

Thanks

Way back in the Day Charlie Chambers belonged to the same club as I did on the south side of Chicago in Lansing Il. Flew his K&B7.5 powered Cougar off the road in front of our grass field! Not a testimonial but was the first time I ever saw a jet fly and I was hooked! Went to Toledo and BV was there with his fan unit and the Sport Shark I think. That was all she wrote! I was ruined forever! Thanks Charlie and god keep you!

I was at the Woodland/Davis jet meet in Oct of 1996 and Larry Wolf had his Cougar that was newly converted to the Golden West turbine. That was the first D/F model converted to turbine that I had ever seen. Since that day, I will forever love the smell of burning kerosene in the morning. Give Larry a call, he can give you all the info you need.

There was a JHH Cougar powered by a golden west turbine at Florida Jets in 97. SKS Video has footage of it on there Florida Jets 97 tape.

Yes, Cougars fly.

RAM 500 Conversion, 20+ flights, now adding decals and clear coat.

Joe Paztor Sr. used to fly a GW powered JHH Cougar and although I never saw it fly, I heard that it flew real good. I have seen the GW turbine fly a BVM Sabre very well.

The RAM 500 conversion that Larry did is very nice.....somewhat complicated flap/speed brake mechanism......

Only caveat I have seen with Cougars/Panthers, both large like the CAI and small with the JHH is never lift off without plenty of airspeed.......they do like to snap if you do......

But once in the air, Larry's plane is sweeeet!.........fast and grooves........

Larry seldom uses more than 1/2 of our 700 ft grass field to get it down and stopped.....

Thanks guys, will give Larry a call.

It is pretty amazing that we already have turbine nostalgia... Seems like turbines are still a novelty at some fields, and now we are dusting of an almost 10 year old antique. Will be fun to practise that old hair dryer start up routine again.

John,

Also have a friend in Madison WI (C Lovell) doing a conversion of his JHH Cougar to the GW turbine. You might be interested in talking with him. We hope to get both the RAM and GW powered Cougars in the air together this summer.

I fly mine with balance point about 1/2-3/4ths inch forwards of the front main former, about 3/8ths forwards of CG per plan. Tends to fish-tail or 'bobble' with aftwards cg. Otherwise, really grooves.
