direct vs geard
im in the process of purchasing my second heli. Im not sure if i should get a dirrect drive tail motor or a geard driven tail motor?
What are the advantages and diadvantages of both?
thanks MIke

Turning a large diameter prop slowly is more efficient than turning a small prop faster (for the heli tail application) So a DD tail will reduce your flight times a bit.
But the stock tail motors used on most FP micro helis cannot handle much abuse, and the larger motors used for DD tails can handle more abuse.
If I had it to do again, I would go all brushelss, with a cd-rom style motor for both main and tail.
Or I would skip the FP micro, get a decent sim, and buy a T-Rex, but that is a $1000 investment.

Most people will tell you that a DD tail will give you better tail authority and those motors will last you longer. However, depending on the heli/setup you have be aware that you have to be able to adjust the gyro mix/gain to get your tail to hold. Jabo II does not have that option for example so you would have to play around with adjusting the length of your boom to stop it from spinning.

Depends on what motor you get.. what RPM, etc. Also, you have to watch your weight. If it's heavy, you might have problems getting the C.G. right (remember, nose heavy = good, tail heavy = bad) and sometimes you're forced to cut the boom which might cause blade cleareance problems..etc, etc. For starters, try a dual geared motor mount and then a DD and if all fails get a bigger motor.

RE: direct vs geard
I had my FP heli ran on stock motor for a while until the tail burned, and then I used brushless motor to run on 2s Kokam 1200mA. However, the FP did not handle breeze well, so
I sold it and bought a T-rex. Here is my setup:
- T-rex V1 upgrade: $150 ($7.99 S/H)
- Lipo 3s 2100mA: $40 ($4.99 S/H)
- CC Phoenix-25: $50 ($3.99 S/H)
- Align 400L Motor: $35.00 ($7.00 S/H)
- GWS receiver: $24 ($1.98 Tax)
- GWS nano servo x3: $10.95 each ($2.71 Tax)
- SWG pico BB servo: $14.99 ($1.24 Tax)
- JR Transmitter: used < $100 at RC swap meet.
You add them together, I cannot do that infront of my wife.
I am having a beautiful flying T-rex. The trick is buying these parts one by one, and only let the "boss" to see when you are finished and flown it nicely. Until the "Boss" laugh, you can mention the price....Hihihi.
T-rex is good for everyone even a newbie, but fly on a simulator first to avoid real crashing.
