Newb,
Look in the RCU Magazine area where Minnflyer has done an excellant how-to on doing smoke. Here is a link to the article:

Dude:

My best friend tried the smoke system and it was just trouble .
We had metering issues too much oil ,too little and gernerally a great big mess and expense.

Remember the keep it simple stupid thing well I think it applies to smoke systems too.

Try this complicated and simple method.

1. It's not complicated

2. It always produces a nice stream of bright white smoke.

here goes.

just mount it under the landing gear and shield the bottom in the spray zone with small piece of metal duct tape.

Eric

Works great and try it first on your trainer .
PS make sure you are on the nose heavy with the cg.

There are a few areas that I recommend rookies to avoid. Two of the biggest are Smoke and Retracts.

The reason for this is that both of them require constant maintanance. A beginner has a lot more to be concerned with.

Once you get to the point where flying is as easy as a walk in the park, and you find you're even getting a little bored with it, THAT'S when you can start experimenting with "Extras"

Mike is right. Extra toys are just a big fat PITA until you get completely comfortable flying. Then try 1 at a time until you master each new gadget.
