What does "shore number" mean for tires?

it's how hard they are. Like for foam tires that nitro cars should run. If you get the wrong shore then you won't have good traction. So basically it's how hard or soft the tire is.

Is a lower number softer or harder? What's a good one to start with on a fairly slick asphalt track with an electric TC3?

the lower number is softer then the high numbers. A good set of tires really depends on the temp. the traction and many different things. I run 35's all around on mine but your climate may be different. Check with your lhs or the guys at the track. I'm sure they'll be glad to help you!
