Default paddles and control rods

hello on my 36 I have just re built it. I'm having trouble with the swash because the rods on the paddles won't make them twist. what do I do to make them work again? I'd like to get it off tonight after I eat dinner. what do I do to make them move again and what could the possible causes of this be?

PS: how DO the paddles move do they slide in that little plastic rod in the rotor head, or what, that seems the only way they would move. or are they supposed to move?... right now I'm a bit confused about that and nows the time to learn this part. a little lesson on paddles please?
