Default ZDZ 40 in 80" cap

Thinking of putting a ZDZ 40 (blue head) in a Midwest 80" cap 232. It can go up to a 50cc.

Am I fooling my self with this? Should I go to the DA-50 and forget it or will the ZDZ be a good choice.

ZDZ 40 says about 26 pounds of static thrust. Plane would probably weigh in the 15 to 16 pound range with that engine.

Thanks for any input.

For the small difference in price I would go for the ZDZ 50 NG. More power, and the NG has the blue head, very little weight gain, and almost the same measurements.

Harry,,

I am not sure I need that much power. The ZDZ 50 is showing 5.7 hp and 33 lbs of thrust.

I could save some weight and go with the DA-50 vs the ZDZ.

Probably a push with all of them?

Depends on what kind of flying you want to do. I had the old style ZDZ 40 on the H9 80" cap that weighed 16LBS and at full power the plane would hover. Way up hi of course. That's full power with no pull out. I put the DA 50 in it and power was more than enough.

Let me tell you...just because the specs say that a motor has 26LBS of thrust does not mean that you could hang a 26LB plane on the prop...don't ask me why...

I have a DA-50 in a Wildhare edge 540 and it seems to do very good. Weighs about 16.4 lbs. I am thinking I will probably go that route as well.

I have a midwest 80" cap with a DA 50, and my dad has one with the zdz 40.

The ZDZ has more than enough power. It can easily go through the unlimited IMAC sequence, blast out of a T.R. and do uplines until it is a speck even on the most humid days of the year.

The DA on the other hand is friggin silly power. Put it on the runway, hold 3D full up and then nail the throttle (no really I did this) it just rotates goes, zero roll. I know I have to be careful not to rip the wings off.

By the way if you haven't built it yet you can do a lot of lightening to the plane. I think mine is at 14lbs with the DA 50.

Thanks for the info Rob. I ended up getting another DA-50. I am familiar with it I guess, will be able to run the exact same fuel etc. I will just have to use some throttle managment like you mention to make sure you dont over do it.

Did you up grade the servos at all or go with the recommended from the manual?

I used 8231's on Aileron and elevator 8411 on rudder and standard servo's on throttle and choke.
