Which P51 for my OS 120?
Alright guys, I crashed my p-51 trainer, although I wasnt using it as a trainer. Christmas is coming up, and the only thing on my list is to get another beauty in the sky. The question is which P-51 should I get? I intend to use my OS 120 4stroke glow engine. I like the hangar 9 because of its looks and great instructions, then the world models because the retracts might be better, but I like the true warbird look. H9 .60, H9 1.50 or World Models Miss America for the motor and bang for the buck???
Thanks,
Michael

I
It wasnt being used as a trainer but thanks for the FYI.

You crashed that P-51 trainer and now you want to install a nice OS 120 fourstroke in a H9 scale P-51. You will definately get your "bang for the buck."

The OS 1.20 4 stroke is the wrong engine for any of the ones you mentioned. Way too heavy for the 60 sizes and not enough power for the 1.50 or the World Models GS.
There really isn't a good choice in a 1.20 size Mustang. World Models 40 size looks good and will fly with your trainer engine.
You could check out some of the ebay sellers like AK Models for the CMP 1.20 size Mustang, but that one is a bear to put together.
Good luck.

Try the CMPro P51 (1.40 size) I fly one powered by an OS 1.20 four banger and it flies beautifully, the model has a glass fuse and the I believe best "scale" appearance of any of the ARFs. With a 72" span it is big enough to look impressive and comes with a nice 5" spinner and pull/pull rudder, flaps, flexible engine mount, drop tanks etc it is great value for money and fitted with retracts(I use Robart HD mechanicals) it looks sensational. The only down fall is the color scheme is Korean war era and a little "naff". .........nothing a repaint can't fix though.

Spitmad,
I checked that plane out but it looks like it has foam wings...Sounds like junk, that part at least. What do you think of it?

Wings are built up balsa/ply and mostly fully sheeted, fuse is all fibreglass, pictures on the cmpro site do not do it justice (looks much better) All I did was install larger wheels (4" dia.) moved the tail wheel to the correct position (not hanging off the rudder), installed retracts, (Robart mechanicals) and fitted the wing pylons with a bomb drop servo (to release drop tanks/bombs)
As with other CMPro models, the paint can flake off over time but I generally repaint anyway. I have had around 200 flights on mine before I repainted.
This is one of the best flying ARF warbirds I have ever owned (last count 30+ ARF warbirds over the last three years), very smooth/stable in flight, no bad habits, gentle stall characteristics, good ground handling (shim the u/c further foward to prevent nose over) good all round performance with an OS1.20 f/s with nice scale speed and will still fly comfortably at 2/3 throttle.
This picture shows the drop tanks "according to the Chinese- incorrect position" and the tiny wheels supplied, installed the wing pylon in the correct postion (under the guns) and upgrade wheel size and it looks great (for an ARF)
cheers
Alan

Acesmike,I've got the H9 Miss America P-51 and I'm flying it with a OS 120four stroke and the plane flies AWSOME.It is a real eye catcher. My club recently had a fly in and when I brought my MUSTANG out and fired her up and taxied it out all eyes were on this airplane.Yes you have to add a little weight to the tail but this H9 absolutely will give you what you are looking for.I just got a H9 P-40 that is getting the same kind of engine.Mine is the 60size H 9 Miss America. Good luck

Try the KMP P51 based on the 120 engine, I have had two, the earlier version with the foam wings (sold it) and now the new one with the built up wing, compares very favourably against the H9. Absolute dream to fly.

Hey Richard my H9 P51 flies like a dream with a 120 in it and so does my P40 and my Corsair. What then would you recommend for them. Also I live 3300 feet above sea level if that has anything to do with it. Let me know what you think

Correct, with the long moment of the H9 P-51 nose the OS 120 is a bit heavy. But, in my oppinion, it is completely acceptable because of how light the H9 is. Adding probably less than 2 ounces of weight to the tail isn't too bad. Besides, the 120 can pull you out of occasional mistakes if you are not a seasoned warbird pilot.

RE: Which P51 for my OS 120?
The OS 1.20 weighs 14 ounces more than the Saito 1.00, which is the engine of choice for the H9 Mustang. That is going to require between 5 and 7 ounces of tail weight depending on how much equipment you can move toward the tail, but lets say 6. Then you will probably want to install abigger tank and carry more fuel. Rounding the numbers off, your OS 1.20 powered Mustang weighs about a pound and a half more than it was designed to weigh.
Strap a pound and a half onto your favorite 8 pound airplane and see how you like it.
If you want 1.20 power you would be much better off with the new Saito 1.25 which is only 4 ounces heavier than the 1.00.

JRF, it wouldn't be my engine of choice but I have seen it done and it believe it only required about 2 oz of weight (I'll find out if he doesn't chime in and say) with the servos in the back and it flies beautifully! Michael already has the 120 and unless he finds a larger plane he would like to put it in then I think, only from what I have seen, it would be a good choice.
Flyboy has this setup, maybe he can tell us how much it weighs.

With the OS 120 and the Rx battery pack way back in the belly scoop, I had to add 4 oz of tail weight to my 1/7th scale Top Flite Mustang, and that plane has a heavier rear end than both the H9 Mustang and the WM Mustang.

The plane ended up around 12 lbs, but it flew just fine. I stuck a YS 110 in my second 1/7th scale TF Mustang, and that plane did not need any tail weight.
