SteveD how did you work the exhaust fo your your saito 1.70? Thats the engine I have for my stinson also. I am building one now also and had a few questions. The top cabin longerons were all wavy when set in thier notches. Anyone else have this problem and are their other big problems we need to know about?

Hi,
Use a straight edge and add shims or recut the notches as needed to get nice straight longerons-these are very prominent when finished!
The landing gear legs require some added work. Recall that they are fitted with streamlining ribs, over which they are sheeted with thin plywood. Sooner or later you will land hard enough to flex the main length of a landing gear leg, or legs. At such times, the gear will flex and the plywood covering will crack along their leading and trailing edges. Solution: Fill the cracks, then glass the gear covering with several layers.
Our YS-140 still has our Stinson flying very nicely!
Best Wishes,
Jim

Yeah I've read several pieces onthe landing gear problems. I'm going to look into fabricating a one piece fiberglass landing gear setup if possible to avoid those problems.

exhaust on a S170R
Hey Juglover Jim: We used brass tubing and silver solder .We mounted the engine, then heated and bent the tubing as required to exit in the same way it does on the big one.

S170R
The collector at the end really sets it off and I think it adds to the sound quality(which is awesome as you probably know). Its just more brass tubing.
As you can see the engine is out of my SR9 which sadly hit a dirt road near our field. The engine has since been repaired and is looking for a new bird...a WM Zero when it comes out maybe?..good luck with your SR9's guys..SteveD

Some Stinsons had twin exhausts that come out the bottom of the cowl then turned back at a hard 90. Go to www.stinsonreliant.com to get some great views of fullscale Stinsons.
