Default Billy Hell knife

I downloaded the Billy Hell Knife for G2. Does your real one really fly like this???? I've got a GMS 47 laying around, and a gift certificate for $100 from RC Hobbies, and a Jr 622... Is that enough engine? Can it really be THAT much better than mine??? I don't think my Extra Special never flew like that. I guess I could just leave the 47 on that if it can fly even close to the knife sim... (When I flew the ex/spec last I was just starting on fun flies- and flying badly- and I parked it for the 61extra cause the gear ripped off and I haven't got back to it. Anyway, three questions: Think it is worth the extra dough for the knife? GMS 47 enough? Is the Ex special worth fooling around and fixing the gear (as compared to ttextra?) Could I make it 4 and ask for a relative rating of the extra special and the knife? Purty please?
I am having tons of fun with the tt, but the bottom of the wings are getting more and more tape -mostly hanger rash and a stupid road barricade that forgot to duck. Can't decide to park it and move up or try to re-cover it. The patches are starting to look crappy. I mistreat it badly.
Thanks, Tom

I have not owned a GMS yet, but have seen plenty of them in these parts and I can tell you, they rip! Also I've never owned an extra special but have seen them and can say that the Knife out performs it hands down. I've never met anyone who was unhappy with their Knife, except a pattern flyer....lol.

I have never had an extra so I can't really compare. After long hours of flying the sim Knife and my real Knife I can tell you that the real Knife hovers 20xs easier than the sim Knife. I could never make the sim hover right (even with tons of rearward CG). The sim Knife stays pretty locked on in a knife edge. My real Knife does a great Knife edge but the sim is just a tad better. The trick to that is getting your ailerons in the right place.
The sim does perfectly match the way the Knife handles at low speed and how it lands. When you bring the sim in to land and think "no real plane will land this slow" think again. The real Knife is great with a nose up attitude. The real Knife can land on the rear wheel and keep going down the field that way. So the real Knife is better than the sim in all most ways.
Anybody out there that can compare ?

Default knife

I thought the slow speed had to be off. With zero wind it almost stops. I broke the gear off the extra special by falling onto the runway going way faster than that. My I'm calling RC at nine and getting a knife. GMS47 okay? Too heavy?

I haven't run the GMS. Are you getting the kit or the arf. If arf then get a nice pipe to go with the GMS. The arf weighs a good pound more than the kit. Any more Extra flyers want to chime in about the difference? I also land with flaps. Lots of flaps. She will fairly harrier in righ on the deck with a little throttle. If you bring it in and blip the throttle before you touch down you can land it like a butterfly.

Default TT funfly vs. Knife

I have an Extra that I recovered and built new ailerons for as the old ones were held together with the crappy covering. I re-glued everything because it came with very little. The plane has lots of flights on it with a HB 61 on it. It's much lighter than the original configuration. I have high rates at about the extreme and it,s nothing like "your knife" Billy. I have it in my G2 and am in the process of building a real one this winter. The Extra will then find a new home.

Default Knife

RC hobbies never did decide if they can order me a knife. I did find a new hobby shop who are cheaper than tower and they will get me one. Tomorrow morning somebody is going to order me one! I did pick up G2 add on 4... I was landing and taking off the destroyer deck with the knife. Okay, I'm psyched! I'll let y'all know when I get it. Thanks for the encouragement. (Of course, if the new shop orders it I'm stuck with a $100 gift certificate at RC. You know how hard it is to find $100 worth of stuff like tuned pipes and ...)

GMS builds HORRIBLE motors and their WARRANTEE sucks ( what warrantee ) The owner, ( Randy ) has No people skills he is a complete idiot. Poor Brodbeck must be flipping in his grave knowing this fool is now representing K & B, what a shame.
I have had 4 of their motors, ALL were JUNK.
I wouldn't waste MY time and gasoline to drive to their location to pick up ANYTHING they produce, If they were giving it away for free.

I thought you did a real good job on the plane. It does not fly just like my Top Cap or Su-Do-Koi but it has the same feel. Knife edge is very nice on the sim as well as the landings. Take offs feel just like my old TC did with Irvine 53 and 12.25x3.75 prop.

Pulls outs on hover are very close.

Thanks for the great airplane!

I want to go back and get the weights right in the tail/rudder/etc. I think if I got those weights close the plane would mimick the Knife even better. Thanks for the compliment. I have a Bucker Jungman that I have made for Real Flight that does fly just like a Bucker. I also have tweaked an Ultimate. I you want to 3d, learn how to hover, learn how to torque roll and even flat spin inverted or upright (not an easy thing to coax out of a Real Flight plane) this is the plane. I have downloaded all of the "3d" models and none of them come close. I'm getting pretty good with tail touches on this one. The only problem is I don't know if I'll ever be able to afford a real plane that flies like this one. If I could I'd be on the circuit!

Billy,

What general configuration did you end up with on your ailerons when they were "in the right place"?

When I say that what I mean is I deducted that if my Knife is pulling to the belly then if I raised both ailerons just a tad it would act like the ele. So in very small increments I would raise both ailrons equally (via my computer radio - I would just adjust the trim on both elevator servos) and try it and then do it again until it flew straight in Knife edge. You have to make minor adjustments to trim your ele but she flies straight now and does a straight knife edge. Did that make sense?
