I also use steel allen head screws that I got at the hobby shop. I actually had one of the stock nylon ones sheer in mid-flight causing a crash. I am now afraid to use them.

Where did you find the thumb screws? I'be been looking for them myself.

I use nylon thumb screws.
No need for a screwdriver!
They work great!

All very interesting, but can anyone describe the advantages over the nylon screws, and where one can purchase the best screws, be they brass etc...

Nickruss,
The biggest reason to NOT use the nylon screws is inflight failure, like av8ersteve mentioned. If a screw shears off inflight, the is no method of recovery...you're coming down hard. I've heard of this happening to several people. I would recommend brass, as it is a softer metal and corrosion resistant. The size is 4-40 x 3/8" (metric length about 9mm).

Yep, as Madean said, in-flight failure with the nylon screws has been observed! You can see some on-board video of the results [link=http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_4087636/tm.htm]here[/link].
You can get the brass screws at any virtually any hardware store...Nylon replacements are harder to find, but I got some from my local hobby store, although I had to slice them to the correct length. But I don't use them any more...
