New DA 150 cylinder head turns pink
Hello guys,
I have test flown my new Carden Extra 330 powered with a new DA 150 last Sunday. I have been so relaxed with this marvelous plane that I forgot that I was running a new engine on a new airframe. Although my flying capabilities are very limited I was able to hover/torque roll for quite some time after the 3rd flight.
Back to the workshop, i had a closer look to the engine and found out that left cylinder turned into light pink color.
To my knowledge, this is a sign of overheating. One thing I failed to do is create buffeting inside cowl to cool engine.
Can someone guide me into this venture? and do you think that engine has been damaged due to this?
Appreciate all advice on this issue.

Danny I have an engine with "pink" cylinders and was told that it was running hot by a local guy. I called Da and asked them, they asked me what was the head temp. and after I told them 160 F even on a 90F day I was told not to worry about it. The engine now has 400 flights with no problems. Call DA just in case.

Thanks much for your input. At least this is good news. But, for good order sake do you have any idea how should I proceed with buffeting inside of cowl to duct air towards cylinders especially in Hover/torque roll where you have little air around cylinder heads.

Dany - think you are after "baffling" inside the cowl. Do a search here on RCU and you will
find some good input. All you want to do is to mount a horizontal plate (glass covered balsa , carbon
fiber sheet, etc...) that fills the space between the bottom of the cowl opening and the front of the motor,
thus forcing air over the top of the motor and down through the cooling fins on the
cylinder heads. Not a big job.

I don't know about others, but I always recommend that one should not perform any manuevers such as torque rolling- manuevers that tend to make an engine run hot- engine is working hard but getting minimal cooling- until there has been several gallons of fuel through the engines. With the investment we make in these things, the care and feeding up front is critical.
I hear about people doing torque rolls on new engines - but I recommend against it until the engine has a fair amount of time on it.

Contrary to who's ever belief, the pink cylinders mean nothing as far as temperature of the engine. Its normal.....I got 2, doh!! I mean"t 3 there both pinky....don't worry about it fly it....

Check this link, the motor shouldn't turn pink after few flights, a slight discoloration is normal, it takes a lot of flights before it changes into real pink.

I'm sorry I haven't been on RCU recently. I just saw this forum, and decided to answer to T. Bob and say that the "pink and cool in the center DA" was just about ready to be devoured by the 3W 157ib2CSTS (LOL!)

You may have already resolved your baffle issues, but if not, Carden now sells a fabricated fiberglass baffle / cylinder duct for the 330 / 260 cowls. www.carden-aircraft.com

You said it, have already improvsed baffles on my Extra. Wish I had known of the Carden fabricated fiberglass baffle / cylinder duct for the 330, I would have surely gone for that.
