Default Soldering

I would like to shorten my ESC battery wires, as they are very long and i think it is hitting my antenna when i drive my truck and is causing a nasty glitching problem. I have never in my life done any soldering. Do i heat up the exposed wire then touch the solder to the heated wire? or do i let the solder drip on the wire from melting the solder with my solder iron? and after the wires are together do i wrap the exposed wire in electrical tape, and the electrical tape wont melt?

I really have no clue, so if its not to hard to explain how i solder 2 wires together, I would be very happy.
