40 size 540 or Yak?
I'm looking to replace my sig SE that I piled in this past week and I'm thinking of a profile. What's the difference between the OMP 40-46 sized 540 and the YAK? Is it purely looks or is there some performance differences?
FYI I've got an OS50sx I'm looking to put on it... assuming it still runs ok after I clean all of the dirt out [:@].

I've had/have all the airplanes mentioned. Both with OS 50SX's I still have the YAK. They are both great airplanes. Other than looks, they are both similar flying planes. The edge seems to be a little more stable, but the YAK is more responsive. If you had no problems flying your somethin' extra then try the YAK. Either way you go you won't go wrong. Also try a Hobbico muffler for the motor. ( extra power)[>:] Just my opinion, Jim.

RE: 40 size 540 or Yak?
Thanks for the reply Jim. No problem with the Somethin' Extra... I also fly a 90 size Aeroworks Edge 540 so I'd think the OMP 540 or Yak shouldn't be a problem. I had my SE for 3-4 years (RIP) Was doing high speed low altitude knife edge passes (something I've done over and over again and never a problem, fun and looks cool ).... for some stupid reason I went the wrong way with the rudder and before I could correct my dumb thumb mistake... splat! [:'(] Sometimes you just gotta laugh it off and move on... lol
I assume both the 540 and Yak build about the same as well? Did you build yours stock or was there any mods that you did or suggest?

For the most part I built them both stock except, I put .007" thick carbon fiber strips under the fuse sheeting to strengthen the area near the trailing edge of the wing. That area is a weak spot for alot of profiles. Especially if you like doing flat spin landings. I also made the aft fuse sheeting the same thickness as the front ply doubler, I didn't like the step. Just my opinion. I think the Edge may be a stick built fuse and the YAK is balsa sheeted foam. It's been a while since I built the edge, OMP MAY have changed it to foam.

I believe their website shows both as foam core fuses. Thanks for the info about the weak spots on profiles... I'd never have thought about that. This will be my first profile.

Yes, both are foam core which has proven much easier to build and much more durable as well. Also easier to fix in case..........If you are experienced with some 3d then go for teh Yak as it has a little more agility than the Edge. I designed the Edge to be a 3d Trainer and it is has proven itself the leader in that regard.

Well I wouldn't say that I'm an accomplished 3d pilot... I've gotten pretty good at doing a blender with my aeroworks 540 and short hovers. I also have a modeltech Magic that I can hover much more than my 540 (probably because I don't worry about crashing the Magic as much as I do the aeroworks) I can Harrier the Magic (upright & NOT rolling yet). That's about the extent of my 3d capability at this time.
