Default 17mm wheel hex conversion

What is the easiest and cheapest method to convert to a 17mm hex?

Will the 17mm hex's from the x work? or are the axles different compared to the original savage?

You can buy some new 17mm hex's and the flange/nut. You have to have both for it to work. The best I would say is the HPI 17mm UV Joint conversion. It heavily priced, but an upgrade that I would like.

Thanks for the quick reply..

So the X's 17mm hex/flange nut set up are a direct fit?...

Thats what im looking for.. I thought maybe the axles were larger on the x for some reason...

No, the axles are the same size. They are a direct fit. You may want to get 2 packs of flanged nuts as some of mine have stripped after about 2 gallons. I think it was my fault though...

I do not think they are a direct replacement as the earlier Savage has right hand threads on one site and left hand on the other. If I am not mistake the X are all right hand threads. So you would all so have to change the shafts on one side.

When I change I am going this route, as I want to try these wheels and tries. The wheels and tries are $84 alone so for about $5 more I am getting the conversion as well. So far in many gallons of fuel I have not strip a wheel hex yet but I am only running the K 4.6 engine.

I just looked and it will cost about $25 plus wheels and tires so I think I will go with what I posted above. A much better set up as well.

if you have the money hpi has a great set, 4 preglued Nubz tires on dish wheels and 17mm cvds. Its awsome deal for $120

http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...?&I=LXLMD9&P=7

these are the cvds that come with it and the pins on those cvds are even slotted

Ok.. So basically I would need another set of right handed axles in addition to the other parts?

So far in many gallons of fuel I have not strip a wheel hex yet but I am only running the K 4.6 engine.
I haven't stripped the rims either.. I just want to try those axial 17mm bead locks I think the axial's have 14mm adapters but I would rather not use them..

YOU ARE CORRECT SIR! HI-OOO

I bought these
http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...?&I=LXKSC0&P=7

these
http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...?&I=LXFKN0&P=7

these
http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...?&I=LXMAC0&P=7

and you'll need a set of 1/8 buggy hubs and a 3mm drill.

If you don't want to do the HPI conversion, you'll have to use parts from it, and the only thing you can have any artistic liberty with is the color of 1/8 buggy hubs you choose. This isn't really a cost-effective way to do it...you're better off dropping $50 on the HPI conversion, even though there's the brokeback purple thing goin on. here's a picture of my conversion:

Why not just go with the 23mm set up for the older Savage? $25-$30 for four, no hoops to jump thru to mount, and a bigger selection of wheeles. Just asking as I've never had a problem with the stock 14mm ones.

Yeah, 23mm is the way to go for $30 and easy as pie installation. I took out my 2nd Savage with the 23mm ProLines and bead locks this past weekend and ran it a little (I admit, I did'nt push it). All I did was some full trigger passes up and down the street and a major wheelies on the grass (cat walking about 20 to 30 yards at most). The ProLines performed without any hitches. Upon taking it in and cleaning it, I pulled off the wheels and inspected the 23mm hexes. The blue anodizing did not even come off at the corners of the hexes!

As for the 14mm hexes, I have had nothing but bad luck. I always had them strip out my rims and force me to go through the tedious effort of dismounting the tires and reinstalling them onto new rims. I did devise a method to reinforce the 14mm hexes. I've done this mod on the 14mm hexes of my daily basher and they are still holding up after about a month of medium to hard bashing. a very cheap alternative for 17mm are the maximizer adapters [link=http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXNWS3&P=7]click [/link]

the variety of 17mm rims is also quite sizeable i think.

Because I'm an ornery sum*****!

And I wanted the never ending supply of cheap, taken-off-a-new-truck stock X RTR wheels

plus, if i get a stupid wild hair up my bum, I can run 1/8 buggy wheels
