if you are doing occational soldering then any 30w solding iron will do. you don't even need an instant heat model.
it takes about 15 minute for a cheap one to heat up. you can get one for as low as 14.99.

just rememer to use 60/40 flux core solder. don't use anythin else ie 'acid core'

dont get the cold heat i have one they are great for around the house stuff but really suck for rc and small elect stuff the tip is to big and the iron is clumsy walmart has a good 30w iron in the automotive section (at my mart they have one in the hardware section thats 10$ and one in the auto section tahts 5$ only diffrence is one is red and one is black )
it will work good for soldering esc and motor wires and makeing a bat pack every once in a while

if u plan on building a lot of bats or doing a lot of soldering u should probaly look into one of the 100 wat guns they have at raido shack for like 20$

here's a nice 60 watt iron that heats up pretty quick for $6: http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...&I=LXPR36&P=ML
If you want to build a stand to rest the tip on while you're not using it, just nail 2 nails into a small block of wood so that they cross each other forming an X. Then rest the tip right on the top middle of the X.

I use the $6.00 iron above. It works great. Get some extra tips.
