Well, i don't seal every engine but I do if I suspect that I have an air leak.
What you need is some sensor safe silicone gasket maker. You can get it at any auto parts store, Wal Mart, etc. I use Permatex, High Temp, RTV Silicone gasket maker.
You apply it to the engine backplate and the base of the carb. Be sure to clean the mating surfaces to remove dirt, oil, fuel, etc, I use alcohol. Then apply a very thin bead (I use a tooth pick) to the engine and then bolt on the backplate using blue loctite on the screws. For the carb, remove the carb, clean everything well, apply a thin bead of sealant to the mating surface of the carb, slide it in and tighten it down. Let the engine sit for 24 hours so the silicone can cure.
Remember, use sensor safe silicone and use it sparingly.

Kliff seals those we use that are known to need it from the get go..... or if any symptoms of a vacume leak show up, an engine will get sealed as will evry single one of that same make and model in the future.
For the details, you'd need to ask kliff.

Here is a great write-up:

Btw, I browse the Traxxas forum very sparingly as I do not own a Traxxas R/C or even plan to own one, just to help people with general problems/questions. It seems that every post or sentence you, beelzebubishere, write contains the name "Kliff". I read from other posts of that he is your sibling and I feel that you either worship him or are obsessed with him. I know that is not any business of mine how you feel about a family member of yours but do you get all your Intel from "Kliff"? Is that what you base you knowledge on; What "Kliff" does or says? You talk about "Kliff" as would talk about a company who sponsers you. A clear example of this is your signature even.

Yes, I'm very proud of my brother, and maybe I do proclaim it quite often......he has done me more favors and supported me through many tough situations in our life, even though I'm the eldest. It's just one of the small ways I can show him my appreciation. I'm really sorry if that seems to offend you, but Kliff won't be around forever, and I just want him to know I feel.

RE: how many people seal theyre engines and what do u use and how do u do it
Now I know that me and beelz havent exactly been seeing eye to eye here lately but I have to say something here.
The reason why Beelz has <quote by Kliff, circa 1974> is because of me, I thought that it was funny that my and his sig where similar, I thought that he was making fun of me (this is before we started seeing things differently) but it turned out that they where just similar and nothing else. As for him saying a lot about kliff so who cares. Kliff is a very knowledgable person who I willing to help a lot of people as long as you dont get on his bad side, which I have unfortunately done. But I dont feel as if I need any help, I just dont like having enemy's.
But as you said who it's none of your business so why would you ask. As I said me and Beelz have not been seeing eye to eye lately but sometimes you just have to stick up for another person even though you havent been seeing eye to eye lately.
As for the sealing up of the engine DaveG55 and Beelz have put up some good info.

What does sensor safe mean?
What does sensor safe mean?
I'm not sure why that is always specified for rc use though. I always assumed that non sensor safe sealer could damage o-rings or would react with the fuel but IDK for sure. So I've always operated on the "better safe than sory" theory.

Great, thanks for the info. I've just gone through the sealing process using High-Temp sealant that isnt sensor safe. I guess I'll let you know if it goes awry.

I seal mine if I suspect a leak. I generally seal with red RTV, but have been told the copper is the better way to go (although I haven't had any problems with the red and the tube I have should last about 3 more lifetimes so I will probably not end up buying or trying the copper)
I seal with a tiny amount around the carb neck and on the backplate.
