Wow, I once thought about using a wireless camera with a fish-eye lens so I could see 180 degrees but the pan and tilt is simply awesome, maybe a fish-eye lens would be better for situations that required very little weight, like if you wanted to use an onboard camera in a nitro RC race. That would surely impress the fellow racers, I once put a camera on my Blade CX helicopter, I flew it around until I bumped a hanging flower pot, the camera popped up and was struck by the blades and died.

Since the plan for my truck has become more of a slow-moving exploration ROV, I have thought about using the insides of a camcorder with a wireless transmitter. Operating it with relays and such would require many radio channels, though. It would be cool to be able to pan, tilt, and zoom too.

That's fantastic! It's like a real life videogame. That would be a ton of fun to drive around the house with. It's so much easier to control a car from first person perspective.
You did a beautiful, clean setup of it too.

In confined spaces it's not as easy as you might think. It is very easy to get too close to an object and have the wheels get hung up. I think a fisheye lens or another camera with a wider viewing angle would help with this a lot though. Driving it does take some getting used to just like any other r/c vehicle. You also really dont have the advantage of standing far away from the car while driving and being able to see whats coming way ahead of time.

There are some smaller-diameter lenses in a wide angle and super-wide angle configuration for camcorders and digital still cameras. Perhaps something could be adapted to the camera you are using.

The software to re-create this project is now up. You can find it at http://www.endurance-rc.com/realdriver.html

This will allow you to use the Z800 headset, MOMO steering wheel, and pedals to drive an r/c vehicle. If you would like to get a drivers seat view but still use your exisiting pistol grip transmitter instead of the wheel there is another version that does not include game wheel support at: http://www.endurance-rc.com/realvision.html

Yeah, I have had it up for about 2 weeks now. It all started off as just a personal project, you can see how it evolved here: http://www.endurance-rc.com/driver_log.html . I recieved so many e-mails asking about purchasing the software or a complete RTR solution so I decided to put it all up for sale.

That's awesome! I wish you lots of success with your endeavor. I can't imagine how much time you must have in development and testing, but it seems to have paid off. :-)

I think one thing that would help with your sales and generating interest in your rig is some video straight from the actual camera. A flat surface run and also a run over some bumpy surfaces first showing the area that you are running in and then going to the video feed from the truck. Just to give people an idea of the capacity of the system.

I will definately do that once it warms up around here. The weather has been pretty crappy lately. There are some old videos posted on youtube if you have not seen those yet. www.youtube.com/endurancerc

That is really awesome. What a cool system you've created! The videos are slick.
