Neccessary for flight?
It "flew" without them. Looked like it was trying to flap like a bird but it "flew"..
They still sell the kit at:
http://www.aaind.com/catalog/listall.asp?listtype=Kits
Maybe they'll have parts.

Giant scale wing struts
I make my own wing struts by getting some about 1/2" dowel at the hardward store, and ripping it in half on a table saw. and rounding off the leading edge with a sander.

wing strut material
I use the material from Balsa USA. They have two sizes. Heavier in front, smaller in real. Strong basswood. Ikon NW has some beautiful spruce struts that a more realistic in appearance, but I don't know if Emil sells them separately. You were lucky to get it down. I had a buddy who lost his Aeronca due to wing strut not being hooked up.

Hi....just saw your post. I am building one also and made my own from the dowel method. I would be happy to email some pics of them if you still need. I used brass ends, blind nuts and such for fastening and they look pretty scale. Send me a PM if you are interested.
