Default Need help - Charging NEW batteries.

Hello, my girlfriend is charging her brand new Radio Shack GP3300's with a new MRC 977 Superbrain.

Per the MRC directions: " For new batteries a lower charge rate is better. Capacity divided by 2 would be appropriate." She followed these instructions and is charging 2 batteries right now and the Amp rate is 1.61 to 1.62 for each of the batteries.

However I have read elsehwere that you should charge brand new batteries at only .05 amps. (an all night thing).

Which is correct? Do I need to stop the charging and set them at .05 amps, or just let them go at this point?

I'm not a electric person but the all night thing would be better off on the safe side.

Hmm, the charging stopped charging A, and than it stopped charging B real early. Neither batteries are even warm. Weird.

Chargeing at c/10 is best, but the 977 will have trouble chargeing at anything less than 1C or so.

If they were done in 2 hours then that is ok, because charging at 1/2 the capacity per hour (apprx) then it should be done in 2 hours

I think

To be sure , push the button to get the stop code (during the trickle charge) It should read 00 for a normal stop and if it is 01-08 then it should be restarted.

Default RE: Need help - Charging NEW batteries.

I just purchased 2 new Sanyo 700 mAh airplane receiver batteries and I need to know how long to leave them on the charger. I'm using the standard charger that came with my Hitech radio.

Can someone also tell me how to tell if an older battery is bad and if possible can it be fixed and how?

Thanks!!

Why wouldn't it say that in the MRC manual? It says for new batteries to charge at half rate.

Probably because the brain is incapable of doing it.

That doesn't make sense.

Try it out yourself by setting the rate to c/10 and you should get a partial charge with a stop code of 02 which is slow peak. It will do this repeatedly until the battery finally drops voltage and terminates from a normal threshold and code of 00. The 959, 969, and 977 all seem to use the same conservative safety stops. Some say that a c/10 rate will never peak, I have seen it do it sometimes and sometimes not.

A c/10 charge shouldnt be done by a peak charge. You are supposed to charge past peak at such a slow rate that the cells arent harmed and become equallized.

best thing I can say right now is batteryuniversity.com! The table of contents will tell you right where to look for what you need to know. I've used this info for the last 2 years and I have never had a problem with a batt, yet. And yes, they will recommend that you do a slow charge for the first time....and for every time after a long time of storage. Check it out. You won't be disappointed.
Hope this helps. Laters.

I charge my batteries at 5 amps all the time! I have an ice charger. My batteries peak fine and I can roll in less than 30 miniutes.
