They don't look like they're for the PZIII. If you click on the BW picture in the top right it shows a Stug with the wider tracks.

Guys, those are grousers on the ends to lessen the ground pressure. They can be removed in real life, our tanks used them too. With the PZIIIs thin tracks, weighted down with metal tracks and gearboxes and such the tank would surely get stuck a lot because of the narrow track. This enterprising fella added grousers so the tank could keep up with the others when negotiating rough terrain.

These are real tracks that were used particularly in the Eastern front winter thaws.
You might be surprised that some SHERMAN tanks had wide tracks too!

These tracks were winter tracks, known as "Ostketten" (Eastern tracks), and were not removable extensions. Wide tracks performed well over mud and snow, but crews didn't like them because in tight turns they were easily thrown.

Those sure look like grousers! The tank on the left has nothing extending past the sprocket up front on quick examination, the right photo shows some of the ends missing or bent.

Well, maybe my explanation was insufficient. What I did not specify in my first post is that the mato tracks are correct late model Ostketten. Early Ostketten were individual add-ons as could be seen from the sketches, (swathdiver you were partially right) and were easily bent or broken. Late model Ostketten were seldom mounted in Panzer IIIs, they were employed mainly in Stugs. Here goes a Stug40 with late model "eastern tracks"
