Cam Netting .... Cheap Cheap Solution
I have come with a CHEAP idea for cam net and I thought I would share....
First you want to get some plain gauze squares, which can be unfolded......
Carefully unfold the guaze to keep its net appearance integrity and lay it on a piece of cardboard..
Use pins, nails, whatever to gently stretch it out on the board...
Use whatever colour, I used Krylon OD, and spray paint... you can even use more colours...
Once dry, and it won't take long... carefully flip over and paint again...
Once dry, again, you can remove it....
Use scissors to square up the edges.. you will find the paint acts like a glue and hold it together...also the paint gives the net a firmer texture for forming over things and holding in place...
Fold it, I did mine the same as when i was in the forces...
I used rolled guaze to create OB straps to tie up and tie down the nets.. you can also use strips of this and tie it onto the net..
I think it looks pretty good....for almost free

I works great....a 4x4gauze bandage will do great. To add realism, use a small brush and add red/brown, green and khaki in U shapes..or if you're really energetic, cut strips of the same colors and garnish the net. (This is very time consuming and aggrivating work, but the results are worth the affort for a static display.) Tie it down to the fender with colored string. For straps, paint some envelope address labels a bit off color from the tank, then cut the width and length you need for the scale. it will stick to the tank and look like a canvas strap. With mobile RC tanks, might want to add a touch of cement.

I agree Bill... The possibilities are endless... but this is a good foundation... I have already thougt of some improvements since I posted...
One thing everyone though... if you have not worked with real cam net... do some research.. if you understand how it is built, how it works, how it is deployed, and how it is stored... then your final product will be more realistic.

What is creeping death cam netting? How can it be cheaper than a piece of guaze and a little spray paint?
I would love to see it!

Hello there Kabul
I think a majority of the upgrade parts for these tanks are outrageously priced. Your cam netting looks good I shall be sure to save it for later reference.
Thanks
Ian.

Here are some pictures with teh tank in front to show you scale.... the item to the far right in the first picture is rolled gauze. This has been painted tan and will be cut into strips as canvas straps.... The smaller pieces have been painted OD green and tan... these are the pieces that will be cut into small strips and tied on to teh larger nets...

Here is a more complex one...... all with guaze and spray paint and a little cutting
KT
(I found as well if after painting you crumple up the netting... it becomes flexible again)

RE: Cam Netting .... Cheap Cheap Solution
Hate to bust your bubble, Kabul...
I've been using Gause and cheesecloth for this for years. And cheesecloth is much cheaper, you get a 3' x 6' (1m x 2m) rectangle for about $2 at the dollar store. Then again, I have dozens of left over 4x4's from my days of having a central line IV. Two swatches per packet, and over 50 packets... I'll probably never use 'em all...
And to add hessian strips to the net, like the Brits did, use that white paper tape. I've got rolls of that too, cause nurses tend to forget rolls that hit the floor (sanitary reasons) and the cleaning staff tosses 'em. I just remember that one hit, ask the nurse to pick it up and put it in a labelled ziploc bag for me (so I don't get nailed for absconding with legit hospital supplies)
You want something better than the Krylon, hit a RC model aircraft store and buy some Black Baron or similar brand epoxy paint. It stiffens the netting, colors it, and bonds the weave as well (where white glue will soften and get gooey if it gets wet)
For fencing or sommerville mesh, either metal or fibreglas screening. Neighbor in the building is a salvage man, and he usually tosses the screening (even if its not torn. I have about a dozen sheets of 2' x2' screening, mixed fibreglas and metal. You can also get it from the guy that does replacements in the hardware store... they toss removed pieces, even if they only have a small hole in one corner.
Got dozens of these tips over the past 20 years...

Whitewolf...
No bursting here. I was sure someone else has done something like I posted before... but nothing was posted..
Epoxy paint is a great Idea!... I have found the Krylon binds the guaze as well, which I also have an abundant amount of, hence no cheese cloth.
What is white paper tape? I would be interested in checking this out....
As for the fiberglass or metal screening.. I thought of that but I like to be able to fold my nets like the real thing and I thought that may be a problem....
Thanks for the suggestions!..I will have to try them.

Nice to see descriptions and pics, KT. I'm sure the forum members appreciate you taking the time to describe the process and including pics for this kind of thing. Keep on blowing bubbles!
Nice work. The netting looks good! [sm=thumbup.gif]

No sweat Kabul.
Look in the First Aid tape section of your pharmacy, and you'll see medical tapes for holding down gause and telfa (no-stick) wound pads. The tape is most often seen in hospitals under the 3M brand called 'MicroPore' in a one inch width, in both white and tan/flesh colors. The 'vampires' aka med-techs that come around to take blood and put in IV sites often have this stuff, the clear TransPore (inferior in my opinion) and sometimes regular plastic band-aids as well.
The MicroPore stuff is usually sold in the civilian market under 3M's 'Nexcare' line, and designated as Paper first aid Tape, in 1/2, 3/4, one & two inch widths on a dispenser like the ones sold that hold gift-wrapping tapes (often called Scotch-tape, even thoguh thats a copyrighted brand name... much like any facial tissue is a 'Kleenex'...

Other makers make similar tape, I have the remaind of a roll here from Kendall thats identified as 'TenderSkin tape. Off the roll, its indestinguishable from the 3M product:

As for folded or rolled netting, the metal screening would be perfect for that, as once rolled, its less likely to unroll/unfold. and the fibreglas stuff could be sewn closed with fine thread or wrapped up or tied down, as a real net might have been.

RE: Cam Netting .... Cheap Cheap Solution
Found this material in the Walmart fabric dept. It's pretty cheap and has a honeycomb like netting. It comes in black, white, or green, but the green isn't really that good for the netting color. Can be painted like your doing anyway.
It's really strong, and catches on everything just like the real stuff. Might be worth a look, although it might be better for modern netting than WWII type. Not sure.
