Default How to get Aviation Fuel

European definition of octane isn't the same as US. I can't recall what the differences are.

Octane boosters are hype and don't work worth a toot. Ask any drag racer or engine tuner (er - that'd me me!)

I agree....octane boosters in 2-strokes are a waste. Been
there, done that in racing motorcycles. High octane gas
is of little benefit as well, unless you are running high
compression, and high RPM two stroke racing engines.

Two stroke engines in general are low compression types,
and are designed to run on low octane gas.

Back in the old days, we used white gas in our coleman
stoves. White gas was just un-leaded gas. I always thought
coleman fuel was white gas....smelled just like it. If you
put leaded gas in a coleman stove....the lead would build
up in that super small orafice hole, and the restriction
would effect the operation of the stove.

I don't know if the laws state that aviation fuel be dispenced
only into an aircraft, or not. Certainly if a private plane was
being worked on, and the tanks were drained....is it possible
that now days....the plane be towed to the pumps for fueling?

Av/gas is colored to ID the octane rating....blue and red as I
recall....so when the Pilot checks the fuel for water and
contaminants during the pre-flight....he can also determine
that the correct fuel is in the plane by the color.

The only reason that I was interested in Avgas was that they don't go bad when stored over winter. Now I have found out that there are products for fuel stabilization that correct this problem so there is no need for Avgas. BTW I perfer the small of regular gas over white gas and Avgas.

I believe Amoco (now BP) 93 octane Gold is the best fuel available at the pump. Beware of octane numbers, though. Aircraft fuel octane numbers are based on only the "research" method which compares the gasoline to a mixture of iso-octane fuel. 100LL simply means that it has the same anti-knock properties of a 100% iso-octane fuel.

Auto-fuel octane ratings are an average of the research octane number and the "motor" octane number. Motor octane is found by actually burning a gasoline sample in a special laboratory engine. Motor octane and research octane numbers are never the same for a given gasoline grade. I believe the research number is generally quite a bit higher than the motor number. If 100LL was octane rated the same way auto-gas is rated at the pump it would have an octane number of much less than 100. The truth is, premium pump gas actually is a superior fuel in high compression engines. Normally aspirated aircraft engines have compression ratios only in the 7.0:1 to 8.5:1 range.

Not sure how gas octane ratings are found for European gas.

Well if I wanted avgas I would go to the airport go up to the pumps stick in my gas card and buy what I wanted. I have my plane on my own grass strip and need some fuel or I need some gas to breakin my eng. on my home built, it does happens every day where I live.
