Which engine for a 27% CA models Extra300
I am trying to choose between the ZDZ 50 or ZDZ 40 or ZDZ40B.
To put into my CA models 27% extra. These are coming in at ~13lbs finished weight. Wing area 102decimeters^2 or ~1550in^2.
My experience level is 2 yrs flying and I am on my second airplane 4* forty with roughly 30 or so flights and feel real comfortable with it.
I have a third model an OMP profile edge 540 with Irvine .53. This one I intend to be my trainer for the Extra
I would like to have Imac and 3d capabilities in my Extra so that I can grow into the plane.
Thanks for any advice you can give me.

I'd go with the ZDZ50. More power than the 40 with a slight weight penalty.
Don't mean to rain on your parade, but the OMP edge or any other 'fun-fly' profile isn't going to be much use as a trainer for the CA Extra...they just fly too differently. The profiles will teach you alot about crazy aerobatics no doubt, but another 'transitional' plane may be in order...something like a Creek Hobbies Katana, Edge or Staudacher with an OS 1.60.
FWIW, I'm nearing the covering stage of my 31% CA Extra 300L. ZDZ80 for power. I can't wait to fly that plane!

40 or 50
If indeed these are coming out at 13 lb., the ZDZ 40(rotary valve) will have more than enough power.I built a AW 29% Edge @ 14lb. for a buddy with the ZDZ 40 & it had plenty of power. The 40 is $100 less than the 50.If it's over 15lb.,then yes, your better off with the 50.

Wreck---Ha-Ha, I so sure I'll be flying yours. Don't think I could anyway cause if it did crash I would have a tough time with that.
I have not started yet but I was trying to beat the ZDZ price increase. Im feeling like time is growing short only 110 days left till the 2nd internet fly-in!
EJB-- Yeah I was going by rcav8tor's results if I remember right it was 13 lbs with a ZDZ 50. I was also thinking about the extra cost of the 50. Thanks for the input.

And another consideration: maybe I had better get the 50 since the plane may gain weight after being repaired from by dumb thumbs! Gotta learn somehow and I won't live forever gotta progress as fast as possible!

ZDZ 50
Fred I would go with the 50 again over the 40 because it puts out more power and does not weigh much more. In the future you could use the 50 in more airplanes than the 40. Don't get me wrong the 40 is a great motor at a great price but you could put the 50 in a 17lbs plane and still have good performance.

Shortman
Chief Aircraft is selling it and another website selling it as well. Dunno if they are just doing it to get orders or they actually have the stock or not. Well will shoot out a mail to them and chek.
I need this engine for my 27% CA extra. (only this)

Well, they had a DA50 on the counter at the WRAMS show. Didn't ask them if they were shipping as I was looking in vain for a Moki 2.1 at the time.
