Help me pick a plane!!!
OK my wife has stubornly agreed to let me get a new plane..
This will be my First Giant Scale.. I prefer to build but I could deal with an ARF
Here's what I'm picking from
Lanier Extra 300-S 1/4 scale kit 72" span
CMP Extra 300-S ARF from Nitro Models 72" span
Lanier Staudacher S-600 31% kit (96" span, way bigger but I may have to wait awhile before I can afford a good 80-100cc engine)
My Wife only cares what they look like and preferd the Staudacher S600.. She thinks the Extra is Ugly. I can't explain it..
What would you pick? something no on the list? Budget is $200 or less for the kit.

RE: Help me pick a plane!!!
I agree, there are quite a few decent 50cc engines to choose, some cost less than a Nitro, and the kits are just a touch more.
Aeroworks ( I think) has a kit of the Edge, try for something with 1250+ wing area and under 17.5 pounds.
Some offer ARC (almost ready to cover)
The planes you mentioned are not considered very desirable or high quality or high performance.
Its worth doing the research and spending your hard earned money wisely, once.
If you are an accomplished pilot and need a plane to expand your skills, look at BME/PAU,Aeroworks,Aerotech,Extreme Flight,Wildhare,Quique S.
Actually the Wildhare combo is desirable
A real nice Sukhoi/hardware with engine and some other goodies for 995$
If I was you I would skip all the 72 to 80 inch stuff and get a real 50cc class performer.Bigger planes fly much nicer and easier.
Good luck

Thats what I am doing. My income has taken a bad hit and saving for this and the best available gear has become an obsession and a real challenge. But I know,If I settle for a lesser machine, now,I will just have to save all over again to get one of the best avilable.

If you are considering a plane suitable for a 100 cc engine (33% to 35%), take a look at the SD Models Yak. You can get the specifics and a view of the plane by going to the Troy Built Model website. The Aeroworks 33% Extra 330 (102 inch wingspan) is also a good plane for the 100cc engine. Finally, the BME Ultimate biplane is a bargain at $650. This plane has wingspan of 80" and is 87" long.

RE: Help me pick a plane!!!
Look for a used Wild Hare Extra or Edge... my budy got one for $250 in great shape last month.
Don't waste your time and money on what you have picked out.. you won't be happy.
You could also look for an Extreme Flight 74" Yak great flying plane as well.

RE: Help me pick a plane!!!
What engine do you have? Then work around that... sounds like you are looking for something in the 9-10 lb range. If so then check out planes in that range. Maxair has a Velox that is on close out right now for 100.00-125.00 on closeout I beleive. It is 68" wing and will come in around 9 lbs (ARF), and will fit the bill. If you are looking for something bigger work around your engine and do your research. Save for a good kit if you are intending to build.

Tower is blowing out the Lanier kits right now. The Cap is only $129 [X(]
http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...?&I=LXSVC3&P=7
Build that and put a 45--60cc engine on it. 45cc for sport flying. 60cc for 3D and IMAC.
Look at this!! 35% Giles 202 kit for $200!! Any 75-85cc engine would be perfect for this plane.
http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...?&I=LXSVC7&P=7
The Giles 202 is usually a REALLY good pattern/IMAC plane. It's an old design, so I'd expect it to have small control surfaces. Easily modified if you know how to build.

RE: Help me pick a plane!!!
Thanks for all the input guys..
You are right.. the Lanier 72" Extra was a little smaller then what I wanted..
I ordered the Lanier Cap 232 kit today.. Today's ARF's are nice but I really prefer to build..
It's an 81" 50cc plane.. should be a fun build.
There's supposed to be a good build thread around here somewhere.

RE: Help me pick a plane!!!
Good luck with your choice. I've flown 2 of those at the local club here that fellow members own. One had a G-g2 and the other a gas engine that I can't remember, bothe were terrible flying airplanes. It may have been there setup or it may have been the airplane, I don't know. Don't shoot me, I am just relaying my experience.......

RE: Help me pick a plane!!!
Were those the Lanier ARF or the Kit?
From what I've been reading here the kit flys better then the ARF.
I figure even if it turns out to be a stinker I could always strip out the gear and sell the airframe for close to what I'll have in it.
The get something better..

RE: Help me pick a plane!!!
Just build it nice and straight and get your setup proper.
Caps fly well... but they can be snappy with too much el. and if your el. don't move in sync they really show it. Setup is key!

RE: Help me pick a plane!!!
Yup! Build it straight. Build it light. Don't cheap out on the servos or the setup. It will fly fine.
It's a 28% model and deserves the best that you can afford to put into it.

RE: Help me pick a plane!!!
What would you recomend for servos?
I see otheres using Hitech 5985MG's and Hitech 5955TG on the rudder
Run them on 6v?
Dubro 883 Heavy Duty 4-40 Pull-Pull kit for the rudder
Dubro Heavy Duty 4-40 #913 horns for all other surfaces
Not sure what push rods for the aileron and elevators.. maybe Central Hobbies Ti/CF rods
I have lots of time to work it out.. I'm a slow builder.

RE: Help me pick a plane!!!
The 883 rudder pull/pull system works good.
Switch to the 866 control horns. Those 913 are too light.
http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...?&I=LXDCU2&P=7
You can use either the heavy duty 4-40 ball links on the servo horn, or the monster ball links. I think heavy duty is okay for a 28% plane.
http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...?&I=LXFRG8&P=7
Get aluminum servo horns for whatever servos you choose. Plastic horns flex/twist when you put ball links on them because they are being loaded on the side.
Obviously, don't use CA hinges. I'd use Robarts, or Airborne-Models sells a flat pinned hinge that is metal. I've used them on large models-- up to 30% size. Secure them with standard Pacer hinge glue. Bulletproof. The only thing is, you have to get them in PERFECTLY straight or they will bind. I suppose you could use epoxy too. Scuff them with a sanding drum and dremel to rough up the surface. Clean the factory oil off with carb cleaner so the glue will stick. Great hinges.

I'd run dual batteries and switches on the RX. A couple 1200--1500mah 6V batteries will get ya 4 or 5 flights without charging. You could use 2000mah batteries, but they start getting heavy. I might even suggest the A123 cells. Light--perfect voltage--resistant to abuse, but still a little expensive for my wallet. They will get cheaper in a few years. MH are still really cheap and they do the job just fine.

My reply never insinuated anything about it being a bad flying airplane because it was a Cap. All I am saying is that 2 members at my field have the 80" Lanier Cap 232 built from the kit and when I flew them, I thought bothe of them flew terrible. Currently I fly a 80" Wildhare Yak, 98" Wildhare Extra 260, and a Pacific Planes 102" Extra 260. The Lanier wasn't even within a mile of any of those on how it flew.

RE: Help me pick a plane!!!
You might check out my Yak if you like building. It is a little more expensive but the quality it top notch and it builds easy. My plane weighs 16 lbx 6oz with 1420 sq" of wing. Check out the build thread.

RE: Help me pick a plane!!!
I plan to knock as much weight out as I can without causing any structural issues.
rcairflr .. What exactly didn't you like about how the CAP flew?
If there are mods I can make to eliminate and bad traits I'll give it a shot.

RE: Help me pick a plane!!!
I got the kit yesterday.. Really the 2nd kit.. UPS lost the first one..
How do you loose a 5' long 3' wide box?
I already figure I can save 3/4 pound by switching to a CF wing tube and Landing gear.. the gear is 372 grams.. Wing tube is 212 grams.
Heavy stuff.
All parts except the fuse sides are laser cut..
The sides are 1 piece and CNC routed
All ply except the firewall and landing gear plate is lite ply..
The firewall and LG plate are Birch ply..
No Luan here.
Wing cores and shucks are in good shape..
The control surfaces are not cut so if you wanted to alter the size of the surfaces it should be a simple job.
I see room for weight savings on the motor box and fuse sides.. The laser cut formers look ok as is.

If you Want to build a plane OMP's Hybrid Edge 540 is the best for 3D and lands like a trainer, I have had the Whild hare Yak and Great Planes Extra, the OMP Hybrid edge puts all the planes that i have floan to date to shame. It does everything very well.
Take a look here

DUDE DONT BUILD IT TO LIGHT.I HAVE THE KIT BUILT CAP AND DID NO SPECIAL MODS THIS THING FLIES GREAT.BUT WHAT A FLOATER HOPE YOU HAVE A LONG RUN WAY.THINK MINE WOULD ACTUALY FLY BETTER WITH A BRICK IN IT.MAKEING A PLANE GREAT FOR 3D(LIGHT) DOESENT MAKE ALL PLANES FLY BETTER.SHURE MAKES FLYING IN THE WIND PRETTY DICY.THE MAIN THING IS THE FEELING YOU GET WHEN THE LITTLE BROWN TRUCK SHOWS UP.AND THEIR IS NO HOLE IN THE BOX .OR THE FIRST TIME THE WHEELS TOUCH THE GROUND AFTER A GREAT FLIGHT . JUST HAVE FUN.
