Default Engine for Midwest Extra 300XS 80"

O.k.- New kit for late 2008 build, Midwest Extra XS 80" (approx. 17lb.) kit 189. Would love to find a twin cylinder four stroke...Kavan too much, but way cool! If not four a stroke twin, then definately a two stroke twin. So, what cha all got for suggestions?? Gas or Glo? This kit calls for up to 3.0 (50cc) gas motor.

Not twins, but I had this plane several years ago and flew it first with a Zenoah G45 (flew fine) and then with a DA50 - was terrific with a DA50. If I had one again I would say a DA50 would be my first choice.

I had one with a G45 @ 16lbs. The G45 will give you decent performance and you can perform most IMAC maneuvers easily but not 3D. If you want 3D then the DA50 is the answer.

Figure out how much weight you need to balance it. Buy any 50-60cc engine that will balance it. I had one with a Poulan 54cc engine.

Thanks to all for the response-Any one ever run a 3W 56 twin? Also the Brillelli 50cc looks interesting. I have no experience with any of the small gas engines. What ever wins, no Chinese engines will be used...

I have a 3W56 twin in a 88" EF yak. It loves to show of. It takes a bunch of work to mount it and make a two into one header to keep muffler weight down. Mines on a Mousse can muffler and the old farts always compliment how quiet it is. A comp. pipe would be a way to go also. There's pics of my install in the EF Yak thread. I have a ZDZ 50 also and it makes lots more power. Rips a 23x8 Xoar straight up.
In a 80 inch plane you will have handling issues with the extra 1# of weight. But at 80" you will have issues with any gas install worth a dang. It really needs to be in a 1400 sq.in. plane and will 3D up to 21Lb plane just fine. In fact I had it in a 24.5 lb extra and could climb slowly from hover. At 17lb 9 oz its a blast. The only smaller planesI would recomend for the 3W56 is the Wild Hare edge. That plane is naturaly rock solid. And probably EF's new extra.
Build the plane you have but plan on moving your stuff into a better plane soon. There's some real awsome planes to be had right now. If you want a motor for that plane to fly best get a cheap DL. Use their cheap light weight muffler and Sell the whole thing when you are ready to move up.

Yes, the Boulder field is still around. I haven't been out there in several years, but from what I hear, the club is alive and vibrant.

Altavillan,
Suprisingly, the reason for this plane was two fold: price(325.00) and the fact its a kit. I have had some problems finding kits in this size range. Next build will probably be a Miles Reed Soution-X hopefully in the upper size limit... I'm not old, but I do enjoy building kits. Arfs do nothing for me, I keep one or two small ones for beater planes but as far as the larger planes, I rather build them myself. I build because the winter in MI sucks, not good for anything else.

Just the opposite here. Summers are for work. I'm in construction so I'm in the sun all day. The last thing I want to do for fun is stand in the sun!
Winters are my fly time. The 24.5 # plane is the 101" GP extra kit. The 56 was working too hard and I removed it to the EF Yak so it should last a bit longer. Someday I'll snag a 80cc twin for it.
